Reno Aces News Release
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -Josh Wilson gave Reno a quick first-inning lead, and Seth Etherton was solid through five innings of work Saturday afternoon at Spring Mobile Ballpark, as the Reno Aces topped the Salt Lake Bees, 7-2, marking the first win in franchise history.
The Aces took a first-inning lead and never looked back, exploding for five runs in the second and one more in the third to provide the knockout punch on Saturday.
Etherton (1-0) kept a potent Salt Lake offense at bay through five frames to earn the victory. The right-hander allowed just two runs-one earned-on three hits. He walked four and struck out four. Out of the Reno bullpen, Esmerling Vasquez tossed two perfect innings, Josh Ellis threw a spotless eighth and Leo Rosales worked a scoreless ninth.
The loss fell to Bees starter Matt Palmer (0-1), who lasted just 1.2 innings. Palmer surrendered six runs on nine hits.
On Saturday, the Reno offense wasted little time before lighting up the scoreboard. Consecutive walks issued to Alex Romero and Josh Whitesell brought Wilson to the plate with two away in the inning. Wilson promptly singled sharply to right, chasing home Romero, who narrowly beat the tag at home plate to give the Aces an early 1-0 advantage.
In the second, Agustin Murillo led off the frame with a triple off the wall in right-the first in franchise history. One pitch later, Murillo cruised home thanks to a run-scoring groundball to short off the bat of Rusty Ryal for a 2-0 Reno lead. Later in the frame, Romero belted a double to the left-center gap, scoring two and pushing the Aces lead to 4-0. One batter later, the lead grew to five, thanks to an RBI single to left by Whitesell. Two batters later, Ruben Gotay hit a rope down the right-field line, scoring Whitesell and ending Palmer's day on the mound.
Salt Lake pushed two across in the second, but in the third, the Reno offense continued its assault. A John Hester double was followed by a run-scoring Brandon Watson single, pushing the score to 7-2.
From there, the game belonged to the Reno bullpen.
The Aces and Bees will hook up in the series finale at Spring Mobile Ballpark on Sunday afternoon. Reno gives the ball to Australian southpaw Travis Blackley (0-0, No ERA), and Salt Lake turns to right-hander Mike MacDonald (0-0, No ERA). First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. PT and can be heard on Fox Sports Radio 1450.
