April 11, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox beat the Las Vegas 51s for the third straight time Saturday by the score of 6-4 in front of 1,775 fans at Security Service Field.
The 51s struck first scoring one run in the first inning on an RBI single by designated hitter Randy Ruiz. Although the 51s took the early lead, they would never lead again the rest of the way.
51s starting pitcher Bradley Mills (0-1) was ineffective in his first start of the season lasting just 3.2 innings and conceding six runs, three earned, on six hits and three walks. After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Colorado Springs tied the game in the second on a sacrifice fly by catcher Paul Phillips before exploding for three runs in the third and two runs in the fourth. First baseman Dan Ortmeier gave the Sox the lead in third with an RBI single before coming around to score along with right fielder Matt Murton on a two-run single by designated hitter Edwin Bellorin. The Sox padded their lead in the fourth on RBI hits from Matt Miller and Murton.
Right handed pitcher Jason Hirsh (1-0) pitched well through five innings, only to run into trouble in the sixth, when the 51s made a late rally. Hirsh surrendered three runs in the inning, one on an RBI single by first baseman Brett Harper and two on a single by second baseman Howie Clark. Hirsh ended the game with four runs allowed on eight hits over 5.2 innings.
Sox reliever Matt Daley made quick work of the 51s by tossing two perfect innings. Daley retired all six batters he faced, including four via strikeouts, and only needed 18 pitches to get the job done.
Joel Peralta came on in the top of the ninth and notched his first save of the season despite walking two batters.
The Sky Sox go for the four-game sweep tomorrow as they send out RHP Brandon Hynick (NR) to face off against LHP Brett Cecil (NR) in a 1:05 PM Sunday matinee.
