Aces Get Point in 3-2 Shootout Loss to Reign

Wes Goldie broke the most prestigious record in ECHL history, and the Alaska Aces salvaged a point with a key goal late in regulation, but the Aces fell 3-2 in a shootout to the Ontario Reign on Saturday night from the Citizens Business Bank Arena. Alaska picked up a point for the 13th time in the last 15 games, and kept a four point lead over Ontario in the Western Conference standings. Alaska lowered their magic number to clinch the Brabham Cup for the league's best record to four points. The Aces moved to 42-16-10 on the season, climbing to 94 points. The Aces head to Las Vegas on Tuesday and Bakersfield on Wednesday before returning to Ontario to close the regular season next Friday and Saturday night. Goldie opened the scoring by breaking the record. Goldie took a pass from Brian Swanson on the right wing and from the slot blistered a one-timer past Chris Carozzi at 8:23 to take sole ownership of the all-time ECHL goal scoring mark. It was his 34th goal of the season and his 369th of his ECHL career. The Reign tied the score at 14:13 when Jason Beeman scored his second of the year. The Aces outshot the Reign 13-5 in the period.

Neither team scored in the second period with Ontario outshooting Alaska 8-7.

With the game tied 1-1 in the third period, Ontario's Bill Bagron was awarded a penalty shot at 9:07. Gerald Coleman stopped Bagron keeping the game tied. However, Ontario took their first lead of the weekend at 13:11 when Tristan King scored on a rebound from the bottom of the right circle. The Aces fought their way back to tie the score at 18:17 when Ryan Cruthers scored off of a feed from behind the goal line by Dan Kissel. The Aces had a power play chance in the final minute of regulation and overtime, but could not find the game-winner. After a scoreless overtime, the Reign won the shootout going 2-5 while the Aces went 0-4.

Gerald Coleman (18-4-3) took the shootout loss, making 24 saves on 26 shots and stopping three of five shooters. Chris Carozzi (17-7-4) picked up the win, stopping 34 of 36 shots and all four shooters in the shootout. The Aces power play went 1-6, while the Reign went 0-4. The Aces outshot the Reign 36-27 in the game.
