Aces Acquire Blueliner in Trade

September 10, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Alaska Aces have acquired defenseman Jonathan Gauthier, drafted by Montreal three years ago, from ECHL rival Greenville in exchange for financial considerations.

Gauthier will be entering his third pro season with his fifth different club in the ECHL, having split last year with Dayton, Augusta, and Greenville. The Aces meet the Grrrowl March 21 in Greenville, S.C. He scored seven goals and assisted on 11 others in 68 games last season, with a combined total of 70 minutes in penalties.

The 6-2, 200-pound Gauthier registered 13 goals and 13 assists in only 49 games during his rookie campaign of 2001-02, when he started the year in Reading and finished up with Dayton. Originally a ninth-round selection of the Canadiens in 2000, Gauthier played junior hockey in his home province of Quebec, scoring 30 goals and accumulating at least 100 PIM in each of his last two seasons with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the QMJHL.

"Jonathan is extremely gifted and I think will be able to take full advantage of his abilities on the Olympic ice," said Alaska head coach Davis Payne. "Plus, he's only 23, so you know he's only going to get better."

The club has brought Evan Maxwell aboard as event supervisor for the 2003-04 season. A graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College, near Cleveland, Ohio, Maxwell gained experience in the public relations department for the Cleveland Barons of the American Hockey League.

The Aces also are currently looking for volunteers to assist with game-day events and promotions. For specific details, please call 258-ACES and ask for Erin Myers. Alaska opens its regular season against the Fresno Falcons on October 24 in Sullivan Arena at 7:00 p.m.
