Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
The IronBirds look to get back in the win column tonight as they welcome the Batavia Muckdogs to town. Aberdeen will have rehabbing right-hander Brandon Erbe on the hill to start the game. Luis Lebron, a fellow rehabbing right-hander, will be first out of the bullpen. Scheduled starter Parker Bridwell will pitch third.
Tonight's Match-up
The Aberdeen IronBirds return to Ripken Stadium tonight to open a three-game series with the Batavia Muckdogs (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals). The IronBirds have dropped two straight after falling to the Brooklyn Cyclones last night 11-1. Following the loss, Aberdeen dropped to 0-10 over the last two years at MCU Park. They were outscored in the two-game series 24-1. They'll try to get back in the win column tonight with rehabbing right-hander Brandon Erbe on the hill. Erbe, who is currently on the Triple-A Norfolk Tides roster, is recovering from labrum surgery. He'll go up against right-hander Todd McInnis.
Rehabbers
The Baltimore Orioles added rehabbing right-handed pitchers Erbe and Luis Lebron to the IronBirds roster today. Erbe will start tonight's ball game. Lebron, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, will pitch after Erbe. Tonight's scheduled starter, Parker Bridwell, will be the second man out of the bullpen.
Brooklyn Beat-Downs
The IronBirds were dominated in a two-game series in Brooklyn. The Cyclones outscored the IronBirds 24-1. Aberdeen mustered just 10 hits over the two games, while Brooklyn pounded out 31 base knocks. The IronBirds will not play the Cyclones again this season.
Joe Velleggia Update
First baseman Joe Velleggia has not played since July 19th since breaking his orbital bone and nose when a ball ricocheted off a pole and hit him in the face while hitting in the batting cage. Velleggia's injury did not require surgery and he was not placed on the disabled list. Now that the swelling is down in his face, Velleggia hit in the cage before tonight's ball game and hopes to be back in the lineup soon. He currently leads the IronBirds in all three Triple Crown categories.
Top College Hitter Visits Aberdeen
Former Florida International University star Garret Wittels is on the Muckdogs roster. Wittels finished the 2010 season with a 56-game hitting streak. The streak was two hits shy of Robin Ventura's 58-game streak, which is a Division I record. He was nominated in 2010 for the Best Male College Athlete ESPY Award.
