Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Tonight's Match-up
The IronBirds will try to pick up their third win of the season tonight against the Hudson Valley Renegades (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays). The IronBirds are losers of six straight games, and 15 of their last 16 contests. Last night they suffered their worst loss of the season, falling at Hudson Valley 15-1. The Renegades put up 10 runs on 11 hits in the seventh and eighth innings to blow out Aberdeen. Right-hander David Baker will try to right the ship. Opposing hitters are batting just .157 against Baker in his three starts. He'll go up against one of the top pitchers in the New York-Penn League, right-hander Jason McEachern.
July 4th
The IronBirds will celebrate July 4th by wearing a commemorative "Stars and Stripes" baseball cap. The player-worn hats will be autographed and raffled off with the proceeds benefitting a military charity. The hats will also be available to fans at The Hangar. In addition, fireworks will follow the final out of the contest. Historically, the IronBirds have struggled on July 4th. They are just 2-6 in eight games on this date (the club was rained out in 2007).
Givens Keeps on Grinding
IronBirds shortstop Mychal Givens is tied with teammate Connor Narron and one other player for the league's lead in games played (17). In addition to playing every day, Givens has been hitting the ball well. He's currently leading the club in batting average (.317), runs scored (7), hits (20), stolen bases (3) and on-base percentage (.403).
Road Woes Continue
The IronBirds were outscored in their two games at Hudson Valley by a combined score of 23-1. The club went winless on their previous five-game road trip, and now are 0-8 away from Ripken Stadium. They are the only team in the NYPL to not have a road win this season.
Rough Start to July
The IronBirds are off to a 0-3 start in July, but that doesn't begin to describe how much Aberdeen has struggled. The IronBirds are batting just .177 in July and have a team ERA of 9.38. The club has also made five errors in the three games, and has been outscored 30-5.
