Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Tonight's Match-up

The IronBirds begin their first road trip of the year tonight by visiting the Brooklyn Cyclones (Class-A Short-Season affiliate of the New York Mets). The IronBirds are coming off a gut-wrenching loss at the hands of the Hudson Valley Renegades. Left-hander Matt Drummond will attempt to halt the IronBirds losing skid at two games. A former UCLA Bruin, Drummond was the Orioles' 20th round pick in last year's draft. The Cyclones will counter with southpaw Chris Hilliard.

Renegades Ruin IronBirds' Night

Last night, the IronBirds lost in dramatic fashion to the Renegades, 5-4 in 10 innings. The IronBirds led for most of the ball game. Clinging to a 3-2 lead in the ninth, Aberdeen reliever Jose Mota surrendered a solo homerun to Gerardo Olivares, tying the ball game. Hudson Valley scored twice in the 10th off of IronBirds pitcher Brandon Holloway. After pulling to within one in the bottom half of the extra frame, the IronBirds loaded the bases for Austin Goolsby with two men down. Goolsby flied out to the warning track in left-center field, ending the ball game.

Brooklyn Beat-Downs

No team in the New York-Penn League had more success against the IronBirds last season than the Cyclones. Aberdeen mustered just one win in 10 tries against Brooklyn in 2010. The club also went 0-5 at MCU Park.

Cooney and Gamboa

The IronBirds bullpen has been bolstered by two arms from Double-A. Brandon Cooney and Eddie Gamboa have combined to throw four scoreless innings through the first two games of the season. Both pitchers made the trip to Brooklyn and could be available to pitch at some point in the series.

Divisional Match-ups

The IronBirds season might be made or broken in the first few weeks of the season. The team's first 19 games are against divisional foes. Following this three-game series with Brooklyn, the IronBirds will host the Staten Island Yankees and the Cyclones for six games at Ripken Stadium. The IronBirds than go back on the road, playing three games at Staten Island and two at Hudson Valley. Aberdeen closes out the divisional run by hosting the Renegades for two games.
