Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
For the second night in the row, the Aberdeen IronBirds had the tying run in scoring position in the last inning. And for the second night in the row they were unable to push him across. Aberdeen fell to the Brooklyn Cyclones Monday night 5-4.
After both sides traded zeros through the first three innings, Brooklyn took the lead in the fourth. With one out, Richard Lucas walked and Brian Harrison doubled. IronBirds starter Matt Drummond balked, knocking in Lucas. Travis Taijeron knocked in Harrison with an RBI-single, making it 2-0.
The Cyclones doubled their lead in the fourth. Nelfi Zapata singled and Danny Muno walked, putting two on with nobody out. Brandon Brown laid down a sacrifice bunt. Reliever Alex Schmarzo threw the ball wildly to first base, allowing Zapata to score. Javier Rodriguez then knocked in Muno with an RBI-single, making it 4-0.
Aberdeen pulled to within one in the sixth. With one on and nobody out, Joe Velleggia (1) blasted a two-run homer to left. Riley Hornback then reached on an infield single. After Connor Narron sacrificed him to second, Jeremy Nowak knocked in Hornback with an RBI-double, making it a 4-3 ball game.
Brooklyn tacked on an insurance run in the seventh. With one out, Muno tripled. Lucas knocked him in with a single, giving the Cyclones a two-run lead.
Wynston Sawyer (1) made it a one-run game again when he led off the ninth with a solo home run. Dudley Leonora then reached on an infield hit. Austin Knight sacrificed him to second with one out. With two chances to tie the game, Chris Clinton struck out looking and Mychal Givens grounded out to third.
Chris Hilliard (1-0) got the win. He pitched five shutout innings. It was his 11th career win as a Cyclone, a new franchise record. Matt Drummond (0-1) took the loss. Drummond surrendered two runs in four innings of work. Jeremy Gould (2) was credited with the save.
Aberdeen will try to snap a three-game losing streak tomorrow at MCU Park. The IronBirds will have left-hander Aaron Wirsch on the mound. The Cyclones will counter with right-hander Marco Camarena. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
The Aberdeen IronBirds sold out season tickets for the 10thstraight season. Group packages and single-game tickets, however, are still available for the 2011 season. For ticket information, contact our box office at (410) 297-9292 or visit us online at www.IronBirdsbaseball.com.
