September 1, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Tonight's Game
Coming off their worst loss of the season, the Aberdeen IronBirds will lick their wounds and try to avoid being swept tonight in three games by the Tri-City ValleyCats (Class-A Short Season affiliate of the Houston Astros). The IronBirds lost last night by a final score of 16-1. The lone bright spot for the ironBirds was Mychal Givens, who had three hits and knocked in Aberdeen's lone run. The IronBirds look to snap a seven-game losing streak tonight with Eduardo Rodriguez on the hill. The Venezuelan left-hander is making his first career New York-Penn League start. He'll go up against right-handed starting pitcher Jamaine Cotton.
Most Losses
With last night's 16-1 loss to Tri-City, the IronBirds have tied the franchise record for most losses in a season. The 2005 Aberdeen club also lost 48 games. Ironically, that team had seven future big leaguers on its roster. The IronBirds have five games to play this season.
Worst Loss
Last night's 15-run loss was the worst by an IronBirds team in Ripken Stadium history. The previous record was 12 runs, set on July 20, 2004 against the Williamsport Crosscutters. The IronBirds worst loss in franchise history was a 16-run "L" at the Batavia Muckdogs on August 10, 2002.
Losing Streak
Last night's loss was the seventh-straight for the IronBirds. The current losing streak is the team's third-longest of the season. Aberdeen had losing streaks of nine and eight games at the beginning of the season, leading to a 2-17 start.
IronBirds Debuts
Infielder Tommy Winegardner and relief pitcher Jose Nivar made their IronBirds debuts last night. Winegardner started at short, going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Nivar surrendered three runs (all earned) on two hits and three walks in an inning-and-a-third. Nivar did, however, flash a mid-90's fastball and struck-out three batters.
Home Finale
Tonight is the final IronBirds home game of the 2011 season. Aberdeen went 12-24 at Ripken Stadium this season. The IronBirds currently rank second in the league in attendance-per-game, averaging 6,560 fans per night.
