Comeback Spoils Final Homestand Opener

September 1, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Auburn Doubledays News Release

Auburn, NY - Through the first 67 games this season, the Auburn Doubledays were 32-0 when leading after seven innings. In the past three games, Auburn is 1-2 in that same category. Wednesday night was no different. Jamestown scored two in the top of the eighth to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, defeating the Doubledays 3-2.

With the loss, Auburn's lead in the Pinckney Division slipped to one game, as Williamsport defeated Mahoning Valley on Wednesday night.

Things started off well for the Doubledays on Wednesday, taking the lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by Matt Skole. The RBI gave Skole 47 on the season, the most by any player in the New York-Penn League.

Jamestown got on the board in the second, tying the game on an RBI groundout by Nestor Castillo.

Auburn battled back and regained the lead in the third, with Russell Moldenhauer drawing a bases loaded walk. It was 2-1 Doubledays through three.

Nathan Karns battled on the mound for Auburn, working five innings, giving up just one run on two hits while walking three. He turned it over to Alex Kreis, who tossed a scoreless sixth and seventh inning for the Doubledays, keeping the Auburn lead at one.

In the eighth, Jamestown struck. Against Colin Bates, who came in with a team-best 1.98 ERA, the Jammers rallied for two runs on four hits, all coming with two outs. After retiring Austin Barnes and Brian McConkey to start the inning, Bates gave up four consecutive singles, with the latter two driving in runs. Jamestown overtook the Doubledays and grabbed the 3-2 lead.

Auburn threatened in the ninth, with the tying run at third base and winning run at first. Unfortunately, Matt Skole grounded out to second base to end the contest, with the Doubledays on the wrong end of a 3-2 score.

The Doubledays will be back in action on Thursday night when they meet the Jammers for the final time in 2011. For tickets, please visit www.auburndoubledays.com.
