Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Tonight's Match-up

The IronBirds will attempt to put back-to-back wins together for the first time this season, as they play host to the Brooklyn Cyclones in the rubber match of a three-game series. Aberdeen snapped a nine-game losing streak last night, defeating the Cyclones 4-3. Down by a run in the eighth, Aberdeen scored twice to take the lead and eventually win. It was the club's first come-from-behind victory of the season. Tonight, the IronBirds will have right-hander Jake Cowan atop the hill. Cowan has pitched at least five innings in each of his first two starts. He'll go up against left-hander Carlos Vazquez.

The Streaks are Over!

With last night's win, the IronBirds snapped a nine-game losing streak. The team set a new record for longest single-season losing streak. They also tied the 2005 club for the worst start in franchise history through 10 games. The win also snapped an 11-game losing streak against the Cyclones, dating back to last season.

Givens' Great Start

Through 11 games, IronBirds shortstop Mychal Givens is leading the team in batting average, hits, runs scored, and on base percentage. The former second-round pick began this season as the everyday second baseman for the Class-A Delmarva Shorebirds, where he was batting just .195.

Don't Run on the IronBirds

The IronBirds catchers have thrown out 40% of potential base-stealers this season. That percentage ranks as a tie for second in the New York-Penn League. Wynston Sawyer has thrown out two runners in six attempts. Adam Davis is two-for-two in throwing out potential base-stealers. Austin Goolsby has not thrown out a base stealer in two tries.

Mazur Picks Up Where He Left Off

Steven Mazur closed out the IronBirds' second win last night, picking up his first save of the 2011 season. Mazur served as Aberdeen's closer last year. He led the team with six saves, while posting a 1.64 ERA. He also served as Notre Dame's closer, before being selected in the 33rd round of last year's draft.
