A Former Admiral Will Take Home Gold
February 27, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Milwaukee Admirals News Release
Milwaukee, WI - For the first time since 1992 and just the third time ever, a former Milwaukee Admiral will take home Olympic Gold when the medals are awarded following the United States-Canada match-up on Sunday afternoon in Vancouver. The only question is who it will be.
Ryan Suter and Shea Weber skate for Team USA and Team Canada, respectively, and one of them will join Mikhail Shtalenkov of the 1992 Soviet Unified Team and Buzz Schneider of the United States' 1980 Miracle on Ice squad as former Ads who won the Olympics top prize.
Suter, whose dad Bob played with Schneider on the '80 Olympic Team, skated for the Admirals during the 2004-05 campaign collecting 23 points on seven goals and 16 assists in 63 games. The past four seasons the Madison, WI native has played for the Nashville Predators and now has 142 points (25g-117a) in 372 career NHL contests. During the Olympics Suter, who serves as an alternate captain for Team USA, leads the team in both average ice time (21:06) and plus/minus (+8) while posting four assists.
In his only season in Milwaukee, Weber posted 12 goals and 15 assists for 41 points and 95 penalty minutes in 46 regular season games in 2005-06 and then 11 points (6g-5a) in 14 post-season contests as the Admirals made it to the Calder Cup Finals. The Sicamous, BC native has also played his entire NHL career with the Predators, totaling 158 points (59g-99a) and 263 PIMs in 301 games. Thus far in the Olympics Weber has posted a pair of goals and four assists to go along with a +6 rating, while averaging 20:16 of ice time per game, second best on the team.
The United States and Canada will drop the puck in Vancouver Sunday afternoon at 2:15 pm CT.
