Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers (40-40, 3-2) have homered in 11 consecutive games, but could not chip their way back from a 7-2 deficit against the Salt Lake Bees (39-40, 2-3) on Sunday at Cheney Stadium. At home, Tacoma is 3-3 on Sunday and 5-2 in the fifth game of the series.
Back-to-back doubles from Brett Phillips and Jordyn Adams (put the Bees on the board, 1-0, in the top of the third inning, ending LHP Eric Stout's outing.
Stout (2.1 IP, 2 R, 6K) fanned six consecutive batters after Adams started the game with a triple into right field. Stout (L, 2-1) earned his first loss of the season after pitching five scoreless innings (8K) during his last start at El Paso on June 25.
Cooper Hummel quickly improved his on base streak to 15 games, dating to June 11, with a lead-off base knock in the home first. Hummel is batting .275 since June 11 and .239 on the year.
Cade Marlowe (2-for-3) followed suit, reaching base safely in 14 consecutive games (single) since June 16. Marlowe (.256 overall) is batting .363 during this stretch, working the count to earn 12 walks.
Right-handers Marcus Walden (2.2 IP, 5R, 2K) and Stephen Kolek (2.0 IP, 3 K) combined for seven hits and three walks.
Brian O'Keefe (1-for-4, 2 RBI) barreled a ball onto the left field Launch Pad, scoring Jake Scheiner (walk) to cut the Rainiers' deficit 7-2 in the fifth inning. O'Keefe has hit safely in seven straight games (since June 20), and has homered in four of those seven. His 15 home runs are tied for seventh in the Pacific Coast League.
RHP Juan Then (2.0 IP, 1 K) was the third Rainier out of the bullpen to pitch two innings, holding the Bees to their 7-2 lead.
The Rainiers and Bees will conclude their matchup at Cheney Stadium on Monday's July 3 Extravaganza. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PT; RHP Jose Rodriguez will start for Tacoma against Salt Lake LHP Jake Kalish.
