Gwinnett Stripers News Release
NORFOLK, VA - The Norfolk Tides (49-68) picked up two early runs and held on to edge the Gwinnett Braves (53-64) by a 2-1 score in game two of the three-game series Tuesday night at Harbor Park.
Despite the loss, the G-Braves remain in a first place tie with Durham in the International League South as the Bulls were defeated by Pawtucket, 3-1.
The first run of the night came in the bottom of the second off Gwinnett starting pitcher Kanekoa Texeira. With one out, L.J. Hoes drilled a double off the wall in left and scored on a two-out single to right by Paul Janish.
Norfolk pushed the lead to 2-0 with a run in the bottom of the third as Dariel Alvarez led off with a single and scored from first on a double to right-center by Trey Mancini.
Gwinnett cut into the lead by scoring its only run in the top of the fourth off Norfolk starter Tyler Wilson. Omar Infante led off with a single and moved to third on a double to left-center by Rio Ruiz. However, Infante was caught too far off the bag between third and home and was tagged out, as Ruiz subsequently moved to third on the play.
Mel Rojas Jr. followed with an infield single behind the bag at second, scoring Ruiz to make it 2-1. But the G-Braves had no answer for a trio of Norfolk relievers and the 2-1 score held up the rest of the way.
Texeira (L, 1-7) allowed eight hits and two runs over 5.0 innings for Gwinnett and Ryan Weber had another solid relief outing, holding Norfolk to four hits over the final 3.0 innings while striking out two.
Wilson (W, 2-0) held the G-Braves to five hits and a run over 5.0 innings while striking out three. Zach Phillips (H, 4) got through the next 2.0 innings while striking out three before Pedro Beato (H, 13) yielded a hit in a scoreless eighth. Jason Stoffel (S, 10) worked the top of the ninth registering two strikeouts to nail down the win for the Tides.
For Gwinnett, Blake Lalli was 2-for-3 and Rojas Jr. was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
For Norfolk, Alvarez was 4-for-4 with a run, while Janish and Mike Yastrzemski were each 2-for-3. Christian Walker went 2-for-4 for the Tides.
The G-Braves and Tides conclude the three-game series Wednesday afternoon at Harbor Park. Gwinnett will send righty Chris Ellis (3-4, 6.64) to the hill against right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne (1-7, 3.82) for Norfolk. First pitch is set for 12:05 p.m. and Tony Schiavone will have the broadcast of the game beginning at 11:35 a.m. on 97.7 FM.
