Norfolk Tides News Release

Norfolk used a strong effort from Tyler Wilson, clutch relief from the bullpen and a four-hit night from Dariel Álvarez to top the Gwinnett Braves 2-1 Tuesday night at Harbor Park.

Making his first start of 2016 at Harbor Park, Wilson (2-0) allowed one run on five hits over five solid innings. He struck out three without walking a batter and needed just 72 pitches - 55 of which went for strikes - to navigate his outing. The only run he surrendered came in the fourth frame, when Rio Ruiz scored on an infield single by Mel Rojas Jr.

Over his last two starts with Norfolk, Wilson has now gone 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA (1 ER, 10.0 IP). The University of Virginia product has held opposing batters to a .147 average (5-34) with nine strikeouts and no walks over that span.

Zach Phillips followed Wilson's effort with two shutout innings before giving way to Pedro Beato, who pitched a scoreless eighth for his 10th consecutive scoreless appearance. Jason Stoffel then struck out a pair in a scoreless ninth to lower his ERA to 0.74 while earning his 10th save with the Tides.

Norfolk got on the board in the second inning, as L.J. Hoes doubled to left field before scoring on an RBI single by Paul Janish. The Tides upped the advantage to 2-0 one inning later as Álvarez led off the frame with a single and scored on a double to center by Trey Mancini.

Álvarez' four-hit night was his 29th multi-hit game of the season and upped his average to .291. He's now hit safely in 39 of his last 44 games, batting .322 (57-177) with three home runs and 17 RBI over that span.

With the win, Norfolk pulled to within 4.0 games of Gwinnett and Durham in the IL South division. It's the closest the Tides have been in the division since being 3.5 games back on May 7.

The two clubs wrap up their three-game set on Wednesday afternoon at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 12:05. Odrisamer Despaigne (1-7, 3.82) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Chris Ellis (3-4, 6.64).
