Syracuse, NY (August 10th, 2016) - The Syracuse Chiefs beat the Rochester Red Wings, 6-4, Wednesday at NBT Bank Stadium. Matt Skole was the catalyst in the win, going 3 for 3 with two singles, a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.
Rochester (65-53) opened the scoring in the top of the first, against Chiefs starter Austin Voth. Byron Buxton led off with a walk and then stole second. Tommy Field doubled in the ensuing at-bat, driving home Buxton to give Rochester a 1-0 lead.
The Red Wings crossed the plate again in the second. Reynaldo Rodriguez, like Buxton, led off with a walk. After a wild pitch advanced Rodriguez to second base, Mitch Garver singled to right field, putting runners on first and third with no outs. In the following at-bat, James Beresford singled to right field, scoring Rodriguez to put Rochester on top 2-0.
Syracuse (53-64) answered back in the bottom of the inning off Rochester starter Adalberto Mejia. Skole led off with a base hit to right field. After a groundout, Matt den Dekker singled, putting runners on first and third with one out. Following a strikeout, Zach Collier hit a bases-clearing double off the right-field wall, evening the score, 2-2.
Rochester retaliated in the third. Byungho Park opened the action with a line-drive double off the left-field wall and Daniel Palka followed with a walk. After a strikeout and pop out, Garver walked to load the bases with two outs. The walk ended Voth's night before Aaron Laffey entered in relief. With Beresford at the plate, Laffey threw a wild pitch, bringing home Park from third, giving the Red Wings a 3-2 lead.
The Chiefs got back on the board in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Michael Taylor walked and Skole followed with a two-run home run to right-center field, handing the Chiefs their first lead, 4-3. The home run was Skole's 17th on the year.
Billy Gardner's bunch brought home another in the fifth. With two outs, Taylor hit a single to shallow right field. Skole followed with his own single to shallow right and Taylor, off on contact, came across to score. The run gave Syracuse a 5-3 lead.
The Red Wings answered back in the sixth. With one out, Beresford and Leonardo Reginatto hit back-to-back singles. Following a fly out, Field singled to center field, bringing home Beresford, narrowing the deficit to 5-4.
The Chiefs scored the game's final run in the seventh off reliever Neil Ramirez. With one out, Christopher Bostick hit a line-drive single to left field. After a fly out, Taylor hit a double to shallow right field, bringing home Bostick to give Syracuse the final 6-4 advantage.
The Chiefs return to action tomorrow night for the finale of the three-game series. Right-hander A.J. Cole is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite left-hander Nick Greenwood for Rochester. Game time is set for 6:35 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium.
