Norfolk Tides News Release
Odrisamer Despaigne, Andy Oliver (3-1), Oliver Drake and Jason Stoffel combined on the gem for Norfolk, which improved to 9-3 over it last 12 contests with the victory. The win also pulled the Tides to within 3.5 games of first place in the IL South, the closest Norfolk has been in the division since being 3.5 games back on May 7.
Making his second start with Norfolk after being optioned down from Baltimore, Despaigne allowed one run on two hits over four innings of work. Despaigne walked a pair and struck out one, with the only run against him coming on a first inning solo home run by Daniel Castro. He threw 42 of his 70 pitches and now owns a 3.73 ERA through 14 starts with Norfolk this season.
Oliver followed Despaigne's efforts with two shutout innings to earn the win before giving way to Drake, who struck out two over two scoreless frames. Jason Stoffel then worked the ninth inning to earn his 11th save of the season, clinching a series victory.
Corban Joseph doubled twice and had an RBI single to pace the offense, while Christian Walker and Dariel Ãlvarez each added RBI singles in the win.
Norfolk has now won or split each of its last eight series, going 15-8 since July 18.
After the team's final scheduled off day of the season on Thursday, Norfolk welcomes the Toledo Mud Hens to Harbor Park on Friday night for the start of a three-game set. David Hale (2-6, 5.12) gets the start for the Tides and will be opposed by right-hander Warwick Saupold (5-2, 2.88), with first pitch slated for 7:05.
Friday is Minions Night at Harbor Park, as the Tides will wear special Minions jerseys during the game. Fans can bid on the jerseys in a silent auction, with all proceeds from the auction benefiting the United Way of South Hampton Roads. Also on Friday, the first 5,000 fans will receive a Tides baseball cap, courtesy of Pepsi.
