Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ-The rules of baseball say the winner of the game will score more runs than the opponent, making no mention of how those runs are scored. The BlueClaws on Saturday scored two runs on a dropped tag by the Delmarva catcher, and another on a balk as part of a 4-2 win.
Lakewood (32-32) is now back at .500 and Delmarva (34-32) drops back-to-back games for the first time in almost three weeks.
Single runs for each club in the 4th and 5th innings made it a 2-2 game going to the 6th, when Lakewood got two off of Delmarva starter Pedro Beato. The BlueClaws, who got a leadoff double from Gus Milner, and ultimately had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out.
Doug Morales hit a chopper to Brandon Snyder at first, who threw home in time to get Milner, but the Lakewood RF kicked the ball out of Pierce's glove and PJ Antoniato scored from 2nd to give Lakewood a lead they would not relinquish.
Both of those runs were unearned (E2) to Delmarva's Pedro Beato (3-1), who went six innings to take the loss, after wins in his previous three starts.
Four runs of support were plenty for Edgar Garcia (3-5), who lasted seven innings and 118 pitches. Garcia allowed just two ones, one of which was earned, on six hits.
Garet Hill worked the final two innings for his second save of the year.
Delmarva scored first after Garcia retired the first nine of the game on a 3rd inning single by Chris Vinyard. The BlueClaws tied it on a Milner single, but trailed again in the bottom of the 4th, when Milner (2-4) tied the game with a single of his own.
Quintin Berry added two hits in four chances for Lakewood.
The BlueClaws have now won two games in a row, after a 12-inning win the night before.
The series concludes Sunday at 1:05, as Lakewood throws lefty Antonio Bastardo (1-0, 3.60) against all- star RHP Jeff Moore (4-1, 2.09). After the game, fathers and sons can play catch on the FirstEnergy Park field.
