Grant Duff pitched five shutout innings and four RiverDogs hurlers on a six-hit shutout as Charleston whitewashed Augusta, 2-0, in South Atlantic League action Saturday night in front of 4,519 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The RiverDogs posted their fifth shutout of the season and first shutout since a 4-0 blanking on May 1 at Savannah. Charleston improved to 37-32 on the season while Augusta, which failed to score a run for the first time since being shutout against Hickory on May 19, slips to 49-20.

Charleston has taken two of the first three games from the Southern Division first half champions, who lost for only the third time in their last 18 outings.

Duff, a right-hander who improves to 8-5 on the campaign, faced 23 batters and scattered six hits while walking three and striking out three. He stranded eight GreenJackets on base in his five innings of work.

Brady Martinez relieved Duff in the sixth and struck out one of the three batters he faced, and Jesse Hoover fanned three batters in the two scoreless frames. Closer Jonathan Hovis picked up his league-leading 15th save as he struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth.

The RiverDogs recorded one run in both the third and fourth innings. In the third stanza, All Star Mitch Hilligoss smashed an RBI double to put Charleston on the board against spot starter Dan Griffin (4-3). The hit scored Kevin Smith who had singled, moved to second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a groundout.

The hosts extended the lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Seth Fortenberry opened the frame with a double to right field and scored on Kyle Anson's RBI single to right center that chased Griffin.

Griffin pitched only three innings, allowed both runs on five hits while striking out three. Ryan Shaver pitched the fourth and fifth innings while Steven Calicutt threw the last three and did not allow a baserunner.

Both teams recorded six knocks on the night with Hilligoss leading Charleston with two. Bobby Felmy and Brett Pill each had two hits for Augusta.

The final game of this four-game series and the last game of the season's first half is set for Sunday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. Charleston manager Torre Tyson has announced that lefty Mike Dunn (8-2, 2.92 ERA) will start on the mound for the RiverDogs while Augusta manager Roberto Kelly sends lefty Clayton Tanner (8-2, 2.47 ERA) to the hill.
