36 Manitobans Chosen in WHL Bantam Draft

Calgary, AB. -- A total of 36 Manitobans were chosen in Thursday's Western Hockey League Bantam Draft in Calgary.

Leading the way was netminder Trent Miner of the Brandon AAA Bantam Wheat Kings, who was chosen in the first round (20th overall) by the Vancouver Giants.

Three Manitobans, including left-winger Ben McCartney of MacDonald went in round two. A 5'10" 152 lb forward with Okanagan Hockey Academy, McCartney was chosen by the Brandon Wheat Kings with the 43rd overall selection.

Brandon wound up drafting six Manitobans, including left-winger Ben McCartney in the second round (43rd overall). A member of the Okanagan Hockey Academy, the MacDonald, Manitoba product scored eighteen goals and 33 points this past season.

Other Manitobans selected by Brandon included right-winger Kyle Bettens of Winnipeg in the fourth, Winnipeg left-winger Jonny Hooker in the eighth, left-winger Carter Cockburn of Swan River in the ninth, Brandon forward Dylan Halliday in the 12th and Carman's Kolton Shindle in the thirteenth round.

The WHL bantam draft is the first opportunity for WHL clubs to replenish their systems with graduating bantam-aged players.

Players eligible for today's draft were 2000-born players who reside in Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Alaska and the western United States.

Now that the WHL Bantam Draft is complete, all eyes turn to the WHL Championship Series, presented by ROGERS, which is set to begin Friday night at Westman Communications Group Place with the Wheat Kings hosting the Seattle Thunderbirds.

The Wheat Kings are making their second straight appearance in the WHL Finals while Seattle is in its first since 1997.
