Wheat Kings Opt for Schneider

Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Calgary, AB. - After a trade with the Moose Jaw Warriors and moving up the Brandon Wheat Kings used their first round pick to select defenceman Braden Schneider in Thursday's Western Hockey Legue Bantam Draft in Calgary.

Schneider is a 6'1" 185 lb blueliner from Prince Albert and had seven goals, 20 points and 26 penalty minutes in 31 regular season games with the AAA Bantam Raiders.

The Wheat Kings, who captured their second straight Eastern Conference Title last weekend and are set to kick off the Championship Series against Seattle on Friday, surrendered their first, third and sixth round picks to Moose Jaw in order to move up to take Schneider 12th overall.

Schneider becomes the first Saskatchewan prospect to be chosen in the opening round by the Wheat Kings since Brandon took blueliner Eric Roy 18th overall in 2009.

The Kootenay Ice, who finished last in the WHL this past season, had the first overall selection and used it to choose forward Peyton Krebs of the Rocky Mountain AAA Bantam Raiders.

The draft will continue throughout the day and fans can stay up to date by clicking on www.whl.ca.

The WHL bantam draft is the first opportunity for WHL clubs to replenish their systems with graduating bantam-aged players.

Players eligible for today's draft were 2000-born players who reside in Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Alaska and the western United States.

Meanwhile on the ice, the Wheat Kings host the Seattle Thunderbirds in game one of the WHL Championship Series, presented by ROGERS, on Friday night.

Only "General Standing Room Only" tickets remain for both weekend games (limit of four per customer) at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also call (204) 726-3555.
