Rio Grande Valley Vipers News Release
HIDALGO, Texas - Seven 14er players scored in double-figures for the second straight night, led by Dominque Coleman's team high 24 points as they knocked off the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 131-124 Saturday night at Dodge Arena. The 14ers are now 5-0 this season versus the Vipers and are 12-1 lifetime versus their Southwest Division foe.
Colorado spoiled a valiant comeback and career high 29 points from Vipers guard Craig Winder. The Vipers trailed by as many as 13 and fought their way back to tie the game on Stanley Asumnu's two free- throws with 1:23 to play in the game. It was the Vipers first tie since the 8:17 mark of the second quarter when the score was 40-40. Colorado subsequently went on a 6-0 run to hold the Vipers at an arms length for the remainder of the contest.
Coleman finished a rebound and two assists shy of a triple double to lead the Colorado offensive effort. Josh Davis scored 15 of his 22 points in the second half and hauled in 12 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Eddie Gill drew fouls the entire night hitting 14 of 16 from the free-throw line en-route to his 20 point, seven assist effort.
Asumnu, who earned the start after his solid performance over the last few contests, scored 21 while dishing out four assists and bringing down six boards. Trent Strickland scored 17 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter before fouling out in the final minute. Alpha Bangura scored 22 and Ernest Scott poured in 15 points off the bench in the losing effort Saturday night.
The Vipers will close out their three game homestand on Sunday February 8th when the Austin Toros make their first trip to Dodge Arena this season. Tip-off is set for 7pm.
