11th-Inning Rally Lifts Shuckers Beyond Barons

August 30, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Biloxi Shuckers News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Knotted 3-3 in the 11th inning, the Biloxi Shuckers (81-54, 40-25 2nd Half) strung together a pair of RBI singles to jump ahead of the Birmingham Barons (61-71, 34-29) and grab a 5-3 victory in the series opener on Thursday night at Regions Field. The win was the 81st of the season for Biloxi and ties the franchise record for most wins in a season, set by the 2018 club that finished 81-59.

The Shuckers carried a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth but saw the advantage slip as Birmingham forced extras. Facing Jon Olczak (BS, 1) in the ninth, Nate Nolan and Laz Rivera connected for a pair of singles, putting two aboard for Zach Remillard. Down to their final out, Remillard hit a line drive to center field that slipped under the glove of Dillon Thomas, scoring both runners and tying the game at 3-3.

Both offenses were held off the board in the tenth before Biloxi rebounded with a two-run eleventh. With Jake Gatewood opening the inning on second base, Bruce Caldwell roped a single into right field to score Gatewood and grab a 4-3 advantage. With two outs, Thomas smacked a second base hit off of Kodi Heuer (L, 2-3), scoring Caldwell to make it a 5-3 game. Tyler Spurlin (W, 4-2) was the stopper on the mound in extras, tossing a scoreless tenth and 11th inning to lock up the win.

Weston Wilson opened the scoring early for Biloxi in the second inning with a solo home run to right-center off Bernardo Flores. The home run was Wilson's 18th of the season to take over the team lead. C.J. Hinojosa and Cooper Hummel followed the homer with back-to-back doubles and jumped the lead to 2-0. Flores would then settle in, working through the sixth and striking out a season high ten hitters.

Meanwhile, the Barons offense managed just three hits across six scoreless innings against Alec Bettinger. Biloxi's right hander walked three and struck out five but did not factor into the decision despite a quality start. Clayton Andrews (H, 6) entered in the seventh and gave up an RBI double to Nolan that cut the game to 2-1. Max McDowell supplied a crucial insurance run in the top of the ninth, scoring Gatewood with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1 before Birmingham evened the game.

The Shuckers continue their final series of the regular season on Friday in Birmingham with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm CT. Biloxi will send RHP Bowden Francis (6-8, 3.82) to the mound and Birmingham will throw LHP John Parke (3-4, 2.74).
