Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Bowie Baysox claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory in 11 innings over the Richmond Flying Squirrels in front of 7,063 at The Diamond on Monday night.

The Baysox used three consecutive singles against Richmond reliever Tony Pena Jr. to snap a 2-2 tie in the 11th inning. Jonathan Tucker recorded the first single with one out. Steve Lerud followed with a single, and Carlos Rojas supplied the game-winning run with a single to left field. Pena Jr. (3-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season.

Pitching dominated the first third of the ballgame as starters Mike MacDonald and Zach Britton traded scoreless innings through three frames. Richmond opened the scoring against the lefty Britton in the fourth, as Darren Ford led off the inning with a crisp single to left field. He advanced to second base on a wild pitch and then to third on a groundout from Clay Timpner. A batter later, Conor Gillaspie delivered the lead when he plated Ford with an RBI single through the middle.

MacDonald held the Baysox off for five innings, before they leveled the ledger with a run in the sixth. Lerud got the rally started with a lead-off double. A batter later, Danny Figueroa brought him in with a single to right field to tie the ballgame, 1-1. Timpner misplayed the single and Figueroa wound up at third with just one out, but MacDonald was able to navigate through the trouble to keep the game knotted through six innings.

MacDonald departed to a no-decision after the sixth inning, and Jake Stevens entered in relief in the seventh. He immediately found trouble as he walked Brandon Waring to start the inning. After a Tucker single moved him to third, a ground ball from Lerud scored him to give Bowie a 2-1 lead.

Richmond quickly drew even with their own run in the seventh. The Squirrels scored it without the benefit of a hit, as Eddy Martinez-Esteve drew a walk from Britton to lead off the inning. Britton followed with another walk to Andy D'Alessio and Brandon Crawford, who had come on as a pinch-runner, moved to second. Tyler La Torre laid down a sacrifice bunt to move up the runners and Bowie went to the bullpen for Eddie Gamboa. Ryan Lormand then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to even the score, 2-2.

Pedro Beato (3-1) worked a scoreless three innings of relief to earn the win. The right-hander struck out the side in the bottom of the 11th, as he recorded his third victory of the season.

The Squirrels will open a three-game series with the Harrisburg Senators (Washington Nationals) at 7:05 PM on Tuesday night at The Diamond. RHP Ronnie Ray (0-1, 5.08) will make the start for Richmond against LHP Tom Milone (4-1, 3.61) for Bowie.
