Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - The Altoona Curve were unable to complete their four-game sweep over the Reading Phillies on Memorial Day as the R-Phils snuck by Altoona with a, 3-2, win at Blair County Ballpark. Bryan Morris (2-1), who was making his BCB debut since being promoted from High-A Bradenton, suffered his first Double-A loss for Altoona.
The game got off to a rocky start for Morris and the Curve as the Phillies scored a run in the first inning off the starter. After Quintin Berry struck out, Michael Spidale doubled and then moved to third on a single by Domonic Brown. With Tagg Bozied at the plate, Morris dealt a wild pitch that allowed Spidale to score and give Reading the, 1-0, lead.
Morris would minimize the damage in the first but then allow another Reading run in the second inning on a Freddy Galvis RBI double.
With Reading leading, 2-0, Matt Hague led off the bottom of the second inning with his third home run of the year, a solo shot to left field, to cut the deficit to one. Morris settled down in the third to pitch a one-two-three inning and Altoona responded in the bottom half with a run to tie the game. Josh Harrison came to the plate with two down and smacked a double that scored Miles Durham from third to tie it up.
The run was the last Altoona would score as Reading tacked on the deciding run in the fourth off Morris. John Suomi and Brandon Pinckney each singled to start the inning before Galvis struck again and drove in Suomi for what turned out to be the winning run.
Morris lasted four innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts for the Curve. Derek Hankins, Jack Taschner and Michael Dubee combined to three-hit the R-Phils the rest of the way out of the Altoona bullpen.
Altoona did have its chances to bring the tying run home later in the game. Jordy Mercer and Alex Presley were on the bases with one down in the fourth when Durham hit into an inning-ending double play. The Curve also had the leadoff men on in the sixth and seventh innings but was unable to bring them around to score.
Vance Worley (4-2) tossed six innings and allowed the two runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts to earn his fourth win of the year for Reading. Michael Schwimer worked the final two innings for Reading to earn his fifth save of the season.
The Curve (33-18) takes to the road for a six-game road swing that begins at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday in New Britain (AA - Minnesota Twins). Altoona sends seven -game winner Jared Hughes (7-2, 4.09) to the hill in the first game while the Rock Cats send RHP David Bromberg (2-3, 3.75) to the bump.
Radio coverage will begin at 6:05 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Altoona Curve Radio Network.
