Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs fell short against the Portland Pirates, 4-1, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester (5-8-0-1) is currently in third place in the Atlantic Division with 11 points. Portland (4-5-0-1) is in fifth place in the Division with nine points.
"We spent too much time on the penalty kill," said Monarch Head Coach Mark Morris. "We need to be disciplined. We are taking too many stick penalties which is a result of guys not moving their feet. Their shot totals were off the charts. We have some teaching to do right now and need to get everyone on the same page."
The Pirates grabbed a power play goal off the stick of center Brock Trotter at 13:32 of the first period. Trotter's tally came off a rebound that was generated by a shot from defenseman Nathan Oystrick at the center point. Oystrick's slap shot ricocheted to the bottom of the left wing face-off circle off the pads of Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones. The center's third goal of the season was also assisted by defenseman Tyler Eckford and brought the score to 2-0 in favor of the Pirates.
Right wing Brett Hextall opened the scoring for the Pirates with his second goal of the season. Trotter carried the puck down the left wing boards before firing a cross-ice pass from the left slot to Hextall who tipped it into an open net. Oystrick grabbed an assist on Hextall's second goal of the season at 11:29 of the first period.
Portland widened the gap to 3-0 at 14:09 of the second period. Right wing Ashton Rome passed the puck behind the net and into the right wing corner. Center Ethan Werek collected the pass and wristed a shot from the bottom of the right face-off circle producing a rebound that trickled to the far side of the net. Right wing Ryan Duncan jammed in the rebound for his fourth goal of the season.
Center Colin Long tallied his second goal of the season at 10:25 of the third period to give the Pirates a 4-0 lead. Pirates right wing Matt Watkins picked up a loose puck in the Monarchs zone and slid a pass over to left wing Ryan Hollweg along the left wing boards. Hollweg took the puck to the left slot before hitting Long on the right doorstep for the tip in.
The Monarchs got on the board at 13:05 of the third when center Marc-Andre Cliche tallied his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Monarchs defenseman David Kolomatis dumped the puck in from the left point. Left wing Richard Clune took the pass off the end wall and found Cliche at the bottom of the right face-off circle. Cliche wristed a shot that squeaked through Pirates goaltender Justin Pogge's.
Jones (4-6-0) took his sixth loss of the season stopping 43-of-47 shots. Pogge (2-1-1) earned his second victory of the season making 32 saves on 33 shots.
Manchester went 0-for-2 on the power play. The Pirates were 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
