
10-run fifth leads to Canaries 11-8 win

St. Paul, MN - The Sioux Falls Canaries (12-4) scored 10 runs in the fifth inning to overcome a 7-0 deficit, and then held for an 11-8 win over the St. Paul Saints (8-8) on Saturday night at Midway Stadium.
The Saints took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Adam Bourassa and Ben Thomas started the inning with singles to put runners on the corners for Adam Olow. Olow singled to score Bourassa and give the Saints a 1-0 lead. With runners on first and second and one out, Brian Sprout hit a ground ball to second base. Damon Lessler flipped to shortstop Angelo Fermin for an out at second, but Fermin threw the ball away at first, and Thomas scored for a 2-0 lead. Josue Lopez would later single to score Sprout, and after an inning the Saints were up 3-0.
St. Paul added a run in each the second and third innings. In the second, Ryan Priddy came around score from second base after a throwing error by Fermin. In the third, Josue Lopez hit his third homer of the season. The Saints added two more in the fourth. Marcel Longmire doubled home Olow and scored on Fermin's third error of the game. After four innings, the Saints led 7-0.
The Canaries took the lead with ten runs in the fifth inning. Ben Van Iderstine led the inning off with his third homer of the season to get the Canaries on the board, 7-1. The Birds then loaded the bases on a single by Matt Imwalle and walks to Jake Smith and Damon Lessler. James Shanks and Angelo Fermin each drew bases loaded walks, and Imwalle and Jake Smith scored to make it 7-3 Saints. The Canaries pulled within a run when three will pitches led to Lessler, Shanks and Fermin scoring to make it 7-6 Saints. The Birds recharged the bases on a walk by Wil Quintana, a single by Will Smith, and a walk by Van Iderstine. Matt Imwalle followed with a grand slam, his third homer of the season, and the Canaries took the lead, 10-7.
The Birds scored one more in the seventh when Shanks singled and proceeded to steal second and third base before Fermin drove him in with a single. The Saints got one in the eighth when Olow brought home Priddy with a sacrifice fly. The Canaries held on for the 11-8 win.
Canaries right-hander Kelly Casares (1-0) picked up the win pitching two shutout innings in relief. Jason Cierlik (1-3) suffered the loss for St. Paul. Jerrod Fuell picked up his sixth save of the season.
