Coastal Bend Aviators News Release
Even though the El Paso Diablos have gotten the best of the Coastal Bend Aviators thus far, the Aviators have made them work for it. Saturday at Fairgrounds Field, El Paso took an 8-2 lead into the bottom of eighth. In the first seven, the Aviators had scattered nine hits and left seven on base. But they loaded the bases on two singles and a base on balls to bring catcher Steve Ketter to the plate. Ketter hit a bouncer behind the first base bag and the relay by El Paso's Walter Olmstead did not connect with pitcher Jacoby Marshall who was covering. A walk to Phillip Grau forced in a second run and the score was 8-4. That left the bases full for Brian Fryer who singled to right field, driving in two and pulling Coastal Bend to within two at 8-6. With Fryer at first and Phillip Grau at third, James Lofton grounded out to first, allowing Grau score. But JD Foust struck out to end the threat stranding Fryer at second base.
In the bottom of the ninth facing El Paso closer Ned Darley, the Aviators put two men on with two out but could not push a run across.
El Paso starter Andy Torres got the win and improves to 2-0 while newly signed pitcher Jose Luis Lopez fell to 0-1 for Coastal Bend.
Each team collected 14 hits. The top of El Paso's lineup did the damage with the number 1-4 hitters finishing 9 for 19 including third baseman Juan Camacho's two doubles and four RBI. Coastal Bend got another huge night from second baseman James Lofton who had his second 4-hit game this week including a homerun and 2 RBI.
The team's will play game three tomorrow with Coastal Bend trying to avoid being swept for a second straight weekend by the Diablos. First pitch at Fairgrounds Field is 7:05pm.
