Lancaster Stormers News Release
The sixth inning is proving to be very poisonous to the Lancaster Barnstormers.
The Newark Bears took advantage of a two-out error in the sixth, scoring four unearned runs en route to a 9-5 win over the Barnstormers Thursday evening in the opener of a four-game series at Bears and Eagles Stadium.
With the Barnstormers leading, 2-1, Bobby Hill picked up a leadoff walk from Nate Hoelscher. Brian Burgamy bounced a single through the right side putting runners at first and second with no one out. Hoelscher recovered and struck out left-handed hitters Cory Aldridge and Randall Simon and appeared to be out of the jam when a third straight lefty, Jose Herrera, stroked a ground ball to second. Juan Francia's throw to Hoelscher covering the bag was high and toward first base, and Hoelscher was unable to gain control, enabling Herrera to reach base and Hill to score.
Barnstormer nemesis Keith Reed, who tripled in a run earlier in the game, followed with a three-run homer to right, giving the Bears a 5-2 lead.
Five straight hits, the first three doubles, produced four more runs in the seventh as the Bears salted the game away.
Ricardo Gomez made an emergency start for the Barnstormers and allowed only one hit and one run in his four innings of work. He walked a pair, hit one and struck out four. The right-hander from New York City faced the minimum of three batters in three of his four innings.
NOTES: Lancaster stole three bases, two by Francia, and now has 17 on the season...Mike Woods reached on an infield single in the fourth, stretching his streak to a season-opening 11 games...The Barnstormers are 0-7 on the road...Michael Nannini (0-2) will start on Friday night against Will Cunnane (1-0)...Game time is 7:05.
