
Travis Wear Chosen to Attend February USA Men's World Cup Qualifying Team Training Camp

EL SEGUNDO - South Bay Lakers forward Travis Wear was among one of 14 players chosen to participate in the USA World Cup Qualifying Team training camp Feb. 15-20, USA Basketball announced today. The training will be used to select the 12-man team for the USA's World Cup Qualifying first round, second-window games including Cuba on Feb. 23 and Puerto Rico on Feb. 26 in Santa Cruz, California. Wear will also participate in the G League International Challenge during NBA All-Star Weekend on February 18 from the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Wear is currently in his second season with the South Bay Lakers and has posted averages of 16.3 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists while helping lead the team to a 21-13 record. He was recently named the NBA G League Player of the Week for games played from Jan. 29 through Feb. 5 as he helped lead South Bay to two wins and posted averaged of 24.5 points, 13.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists while shooting 57.6 percent from the field and 50.0% from three-point range.
Wear was a member of the November USA World Cup Qualifying Team, where he averaged 10.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in two wins.
Jeff Van Gundy, who led the USA to a 5-0 record and the gold medal at the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup and to a pair of wins in the FIBA World Cup Qualifying November window, returns as head coach of the USA Basketball Men's World Cup Qualifying Team. Veteran international coach Mo McHone and former Georgetown University coach John Thompson III will again serve as USA assistant coaches.
The USA official, 12-member USA team is expected to be announced following the Feb. 20 evening practice. The USA World Cup Qualifying Team will continue its training in Santa Cruz on Feb. 21, 22, 24 and 25.
The USA will host two home games during the second window of the FIBA World Cup Qualifying first-round. The USA men will play Cuba on Feb. 23, and Puerto Rico on Feb. 26 in Santa Cruz at the Kaiser Permanente Arena. Both games are scheduled to tip at 8 p.m. PST.
