Reno Aces News Release
Today's Game: Anthony Vasquez will get the start this afternoon in game four against the 51's. Following a one-run offensive showing last night, the Aces enter tonight with a record of 23-33, nine games back of the Division-leading Fresno Grizzlies. The Aces are 5-5 in their last 10 games and 13-14 at Greater Nevada Field this season.
About Last Night: Jake Buchanan took a no-hitter into the seventh inning last night, eight outs away from history. Todd Frazier, with one out in the seventh inning, broke up Buchanan's historic quest with a weakly-hit single into the outfield. Buchanan ended the evening with 6.1 IP, three hits, and two earned runs. The two Las Vegas runs in the seventh inning were enough to capture the 2-1 victory. Offensively, the Aces were led by Rey Fuentes who finished 1-for-4 with a solo home run to lead off the game. Fuentes became the second Aces player this season to hit a lead-off home run - Ildemaro Vargas (5/18 @ Albuquerque).
Let's Get it started: Rey Fuentes' lead-off home run last night was the second Aces lead-off jack of the season. Ildemaro Vargas has also gotten a game started with a ball over the wall (May 18th in Albuquerque). Last year, Vargas was the only player for Reno with a lead-off home run on August 9, 2017, in Las Vegas. Fuentes has two home runs this season and 40 in his professional career.
What Could Have Been: On this date in 1995 the Expos pick Serra High School (San Mateo, CA) standout catcher Tom Brady in the 18th round, the 507th player selected overall, in baseball's amateur draft. In two seasons of varsity baseball, Brady hit .311 with eight homers, 11 doubles, and 44 RBI in 61 games. The tall, athletic 17-year-old with a powerful left-handed swing and a rocket arm elected to play football at the University of Michigan. Brady was drafted in the 2000 NFL Draft, 199th overall. There were six other quarterbacks drafted ahead of him.
That Was Odd: For just the third time this season, the Aces lost when leading after the 6th inning of play. Reno is 19-3 in 2018 when leading after six and 2-28 when trailing. Last season, the Aces were 61-5 when leading after six (second-best to Memphis: 67-4).
Fishing for Ideas: The Tampa Bay Rays have begun experimenting with their pitching rotation. Yesterday, Sergio Romo started the game, going 1.1 IP with a walk before passing the ball to "Starter" Austin Pruitt. The same philosophy has been passed down to Triple-A Durham. Adam Kolarek started for Durham and went 1.0 IP with three strikeouts. Ryan Weber came on in "relief" and went six innings and allowed zero runs on three hits.
Big RBI Guy: As a power hitter, Kevin Cron has accomplished plenty of feats in hitting. On Thursday, he accomplished a new one. Arizona's No. 19 prospect drove in six runs for the first time in his career last night. Cron extended his hitting streak to six games and has driven in a run in five of his last six games with multiple runs in four of those contests. In his first season in Reno, the 25-year-old is batting .275 in 91 at-bats. He's hit four homers after going deep 25 times a year ago at Double-A Jackson.
