Louisville Bats News Release

LOUISVILLE, Ky - The Bats (10-11) fall below .500 for first time this season despite an excellent outing by starter Chad Reineke. The Braves (11-11) were able to push across a run in the ninth to win 1-0.

Reineke brought his sparkling 3-0 record and 0.61 ERA to the mound on a beautiful Thursday evening. When you have an ERA of 0.61 even a good night can hurt the ERA; Reineke had an excellent one. Now with 21.2 innings pitched on the year, Reineke has still allowed just one earned run, lowering his ERA to a miniscule 0.42.

Reineke worked quickly and efficiently, pumping in strikes and pitching to contact. He got some defensive help from center fielder Billy Hamilton in the fourth, who delivered a strong throw home to retire the potential first run of the game, and again in the fifth when he ranged deep to the wall in the left-center field gap to save a double. In the seventh Reineke began to labor a bit, but worked out of trouble. Reineke finished the night with seven innings, giving up just five hits, one walk and no runs, striking out four.

On the other side of the ball however, the Bats have really struggled this season, averaging just three runs per game coming into the night. They threatened in the second when Soto and Hessman led off the inning with back-to-back singles, but were unable to score.

Braves' starter Daniel Rodriguez was solid until the seventh. Unlike Reineke, Rodriguez could not work out of his own trouble. After back-to-back walks and just one out in the inning, Rodriguez was removed in favor of reliever Wirfin Obispo. Obispo was able to retire the first batter he faced, as well as the clutch hitting Felix Perez who entered the game as a pinch-hitter, to get the Braves out of the jam. With some bullpen help, the Braves' starter finished the night with 6.1 innings, gave up no runs on three hits and three walks, striking out eight.

Leading off the bottom of the eighth, Billy Hamilton worked a walk and stole second on the very next pitch. Moving to third on a balk with just one out, Henry Rodriguez hit a grounder to short; Billy Hamilton took off for home, but was cut down after an aggressive head-first slide left home plate out of reach, and he was tagged out by the catcher.

Despite just three hits on the night, the Bats weren't without opportunities, going 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

Hard-throwing righty Curtis Partch (L, 0-1) relieved Reineke and showed some impressive stuff hitting 99 mph on the gun. However, in the ninth the Braves were able to drive in a run on a Joey Terdoslavich single. Terdoslavich was the lone Brave with multiple hits on the night- he leads their team with 30 hits- and his RBI was enough in this one.

The Bats have shown this year they won't go down without a fight, but Braves' closer Cory Rasmus (S, 4) who gets the save for the second straight night, pitched a perfect ninth to preserve the victory for the Braves.

Tomorrow night is Friday, and that means fireworks after the game! In the fourth and final game of the series, the Bats will send RHP Armando Galarraga (1-1, 1.88) to the mound to face LHP Sean Gilmartin (1-0, 1.69) of the Braves.
