Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

Rochester, NY- The Pawtucket Red Sox were unable to take advantage of a pair of late bases-loaded opportunities as the Rochester Red Sox held on for a wild 3-2 victory on Wednesday night at Frontier Field. The Red Wings (64-48) took a 3-2 lead in the second inning and the score never changed over the final seven frames. Despite a lack of runs, plenty of late drama began in a frenzied top of the eighth inning. Following a leadoff single in the frame for Ryan LaMarre, Rochester manager Mike Quade signaled to the bullpen. Quade intended to signal for lefthander Ryan O'Rourke, but the umpires questioned whether he had actually signaled for righthander Pat Light, who was also warming in the bullpen. Quade was allowed to bring O'Rourke into the game but Pawtucket manager Kevin Boles requested to play the rest of the game under protest. O'Rourke allowed a bunt single down the first base line to Marco Hernandez. Quade argued the "safe" call at first base and was ejected from the game. With two on and no outs, the Red Wings brought Light into the game for his Rochester debut. Light, who earned seven saves and sported a 2.32 ERA in 25 games for the PawSox (57-54) this season, was traded from the Red Sox to the Twins for pitcher Fernando Abad on Monday. Light walked Chris Marrero to load the bases with no outs. But he then struck out Christian Vazquez on a high splitter that was called strike three. Mike Miller then lined out and Deven Marrero grounded out to third base, cementing the escape for Light. Pawtucket built another threat against Red Wings reliever Alex Wimmers in the ninth. Chris Dominguez singled down the left field line and stole second base. With one out, Rusney Castillo reached first on an infield single to shortstop and Dominguez advanced to third base as the ball squirted past the first baseman. The next batter, LaMarre, walked and the PawSox had a bases-loaded threat for the second straight inning. But Hernandez and Chris Marrero both struck out swinging. Pawtucket stranded nine batters over the final four innings. The PawSox scored both of their runs before Rochester starter Pat Dean (5-6) recorded the game's first out. For the second straight night, Castillo led off the game with a double and came around to score the first run of the night on a Hernandez single. Castillo, who had three hits in the game, is 12-for-his-last-29 (.414) dating to July 27. LaMarre, who walked in between the two hits, then came around to score the second run of the frame on Chris Marrero's single into left. However, much like in the final two frames, Pawtucket squandered an opportunity to do more damage. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Vazquez grounded a ball to third base. Rehabbing third baseman Trevor Plouffe looked Hernandez back to third base, but after he threw to second base for the force out, Hernandez broke to the plate. The second baseman Tommy Field alertly fired home to throw out Hernandez at the plate for a double play. Mike Miller lined out to a leaping Wilfredo Tovar at shortstop to end the frame. The lone Red Wings' deficit of the night was erased in short order in the bottom of the frame against PawSox starter Henry Owens (6-6). Tovar hit his first home run of the season over the left field fence to cut Pawtucket's lead to 2-1. After the next two batters walked, Reynaldo Rodriguez grounded a ball to short that Deven Marrero mishandled, allowing the tying run to score. Owens walked Dartin Mastroianni to open the second inning. Mastroianni then stole second and advanced to third when Vazquez' throw on the steal attempt sailed into center field. He scored on Field's RBI ground out, giving Rochester its 3-2 lead that would not be altered for the duration of the contest. Two of the Red Wings runs were unearned so Owens surrendered only one earned run on four hits in his five innings of work. He struck out seven and walked four. The lefthander recorded 16 strikeouts in his two starts against Rochester over the last week. PawSox relievers Chandler Shepherd and Noe Ramirez combined for three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Pawtucket dropped its seventh road game in a row. The PawSox wrap up their brief three-game road trip in Rochester tomorrow at 1:35 p.m. Pawtucket lefthander Brian Johnson (2-4, 4.50) is scheduled to take the mound against newly acquired Rochester lefthander Adalberto Mejia (NR). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM) and throughout the PawSox radio network begins at 1:05 p.m. The PawSox return home on Friday for a six-game homestand against the Buffalo Bisons and Durham Bulls. The first two games of the homestand both feature post-game fireworks shows. Good seats for each game are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office; call (401) 724-7300 or visit pawsox.com to get your tickets today.
