Offensive Outbursts Help Hens Win at Louisville

Toledo Mud Hens News Release

Though the Mud Hens dropped two-of-three at home against the division rival Bats - whom they have found much success against this season - they were able to chalk up a victory Wednesday night in Louisville. Chad Bell took the win as all Toledo's offense found the spark needed to best the Bats for the 15th time this season.

The Hens' posted offense in the third and seventh innings. Their rally in the third would take place with two outs, as Alex Presley took a base on balls before Casey McGehee popped one to right that hit just inside the line and hopped over the fence for a ground rule double. Steven Moya stepped to the plate with runners on second and third and delivered with a single to center that scored both runners to make it 2-0.

Bell picked up his first win as a starter since June 16th, going 5.1 innings while giving one run on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Bell's lone earned run came in the sixth, and he watched it score from the dugout. The southpaw entered the sixth and gave up back-to-back singles to Dilson Herrera and Jose Peraza. He got Kyle Waldrop to ground out to first, but Herrera and Peraza each moved up a base. That was enough for Bell, as he was removed with the hope that Logan Kensing could keep the lead for the Hens. While he did accomplish that, a wild pitch to his first batter allowed the Bats to get on the board as Herrera scampered home.

Dayan Diaz entered for Louisville starter Robert Stephenson and quickly found himself in trouble when Argenis Diaz and Drew Longley singled to start the seventh. Presley drew another walk, but not before a passed ball during his at-bat allowed Diaz and Longley to move up a base. With the bases loaded, McGehee grounded sharply enough to second that it allowed Diaz to score and Longley to move to third.

With runners again on second and third, Moya was intentionally walked in order to face Chad Huffman. The first baseman answered by doubling to the wall in left-center. While he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple, Huffman's clearing of the bases made it 6-1 in favor of the Hens.

The Bats tried getting back into it, and made a dent in the Hens' lead when Preston Guilmet took on responsibilities for the home half of the seventh. Juan Perez opened the gates by lining a ball to second that Diaz could not handle and was ruled an error. Guilmet got Chris Berset to strike out, but Beau Amaral doubled to right-center to bring in Perez and make it 6-2. Herrera tripled next to make it 6-3. Peraza then grounded out for the second out, but Herrera scurried home in the process to make it 6-4.

To answer the Bats' attempts at a comeback, the Hens blasted two home runs in the eighth. Argenis Diaz led off the frame with a solo shot, and Moya crushed a two-runner later in the inning to make it 9-4.

Louisville loaded the bases in the eighth, but Bobby Parnell was able to escape by only allowing one run to cross. Joe Jimenez entered in the ninth with a four run lead and shut the door to cement a 9-5 Mud Hens victory.
