Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bisons Wednesday night, 6-1. Austin Voth earned the win on the mound in a stellar seven-inning outing. Six different Syracuse players picked up an extra-base hit in the game.
Syracuse (50-61) struck first, plating a run in the third inning against Buffalo starter Scott Copeland. Zach Collier opened the frame for the Chiefs by working a walk. After a Christopher Bostick strikeout, Steve Lombardozzi then singled to center field, putting Syracuse runners on first and second. Michael Taylor followed with a single into the alley in right-center field, plating Collier to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.
Buffalo (56-56) responded in the top of the sixth inning off Voth. Matt Dominguez and Jesus Montero opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Chris Colabello then hit a ground ball to Matt Skole at third base. Skole elected for the double play, cutting down Montero and Colabello in 5-4-3 fashion. This put Dominguez on third base with two outs. Next up was Junior Lake, who hit a soft groundball to Christopher Bostick at second. Bostick fielded and threw on the run, but Lake beat out the throw to first. The infield single drove in Dominguez to tie the score at 1-1.
The Chiefs regained the lead in the last half of the sixth. After Copeland earned one out, Chad Girodo came on in relief for the Bisons. Skole welcomed him to the game with a solo home run over the fence in right field. Martinson followed the home run by earning a walk. Matt den Dekker then added to the Syracuse total, driving in Martinson with a double to right-center field to make the score 3-1.
Syracuse widened its lead in the seventh. To start the frame, Matt Dermody replaced Girodo on the mound for Buffalo. After recording one out, Dermody walked Lombardozzi, who later stole second base. Skole followed by earning another walk to bring up Martinson with runners aboard first and second with two outs. Martinson ripped a double to deep right-center field, scoring both teammates to give Syracuse a 5-1 advantage.
Caleb Ramsey tacked on a final insurance run in the eighth inning. He drove a one-out solo home run off Buffalo reliever Bobby Korecky, moving the Syracuse lead to 6-1.
Voth left the game after seven strong innings of work. He scattered six hits in the outing, allowing just one earned run and three walks while striking out four. Matt Grace worked a scoreless eighth inning before giving way to Rafael Martin who finished the game on the mound.
The Chiefs and Bisons meet Thursday night in the series finale of this four-game set. A.J. Cole is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite Buffalo's Scott Diamond. First pitch is at 6:35.
