
Muckenhirn Earns Double-A Call-Up

FREDERICK, MD - The Frederick Keys are excited to announce that relief pitcher, Zach Muckenhirn has been promoted to the Double-A Bowie Baysox. It marks the second promotion the left-hander has earned this season and the first time he has been called up to the Eastern League. Overall, eight Keys players have been moved up to either Double-A or Triple-A in 2018.
Muckenhirn, 23, has gone a combined 2-1 with a 2.17 ERA and seven saves and 16 games finished between Frederick and the Low-A Delmarva Shorebirds in 2018. Working 37.1 innings, the left-hander has allowed 10 runs (nine earned) on 27 hits. He has walked 10 and struck out 52.
Promoted to Frederick from Delmarva on May 18, the Minnesota native went 1-1 with a 2.21 ERA in 12 games to go with four saves in five opportunities. Tossing 20.1 innings, Muckenhirn gave up just five runs on 16 hits and four walks to go with 25 strikeouts. Opponents batted .219 against him, while he limited right-handers to a .191 mark (9-for-47).
Selected by the Orioles in the 11th round of the 2016 draft, Muckenhirn played his college baseball at the University of North Dakota. That year he become the highest-drafted player in school history.
In a corresponding move, left-hander Zach Matson was received from Short-Season Aberdeen. In three games, he did not allow a run or hit across 4.1 innings.
The Frederick Keys continue their five-game series against the Winston-Salem Dash on Wednesday night at Nymeo Field. Right-hander Cristian Alvarado (6-5, 3.92) starts for the Keys and will be opposed by Winston-Salem left-hander John Parke (0-0, --). First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn radio app.
The Frederick Keys are the Advanced-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, and play their home games at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium. In 2017, the Keys received the Esurance Home Field Advantage Award for Carolina League for the second straight season, after leading the circuit in highest percentage of attendance based on ballpark capacity.
