Komets Streak into New Year

Fort Wayne, IN - The Komets gained seven points in the four games played in week 12 of 2015-16 and improved to 17-10-2 and 36 points after 29 games.

The New Year's holiday week began with a 4-3 overtime loss to the visiting Brampton Beast Tuesday. Nikiti Kashirsky, Shawn Szydlowski and Garrett Meurs scored the Fort Wayne goals while netminder Pat Nagle stopped 25 of 29 shots.

Thursday the Komets treated a Fort Wayne New Year's Eve crowd of 9,497 to a 7-0 thumping of the Indy Fuel. Meurs had a pair of goals and Drew Daniels, Jamie Schaafsma, Garrett Thompson, Mike Embach and Dean Ouellet each contributed markers. Embach also dished four assists for a five-point affair while Jordon Southorn passed three assists. Meurs added an assist for a three-point night. Nagle earned his second shutout of the season, seventh as a pro, on 37 saves, the most by a Fort Wayne goaltender in a game this season.

Friday the Komets hit the road to Indy and clipped the Fuel 2-1 on tallies by Embach and Domenic Alberga. Nagle collected the win making 32 stops on 33 shots and stopped Ben Marshall on an Indy penalty shot in the third period to hang on to a 2-1 lead.

Saturday the Komets capped a busy week of four games in five nights by edging the Walleye in Toledo 2-1 on goals by Meurs and Alberga. The Komets extended their point-streak to seven games (6-0-1) with their third straight win and improved to 6-1-2 in one-goal games. Nagle pushed his unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1) stopping 31 of 32 shots and improved to 11-5-2 and a 2.16 goals-against average. It was Fort Wayne's first win at Toledo since the Winterfest game Jan. 4th last season, snapping a Walleye win streak of five home games including the 2015 playoffs. It was the Komets' first win at Huntington Center since April 4, 2014. The Komets hold a season series lead 3-1-0 with five meetings remaining.

For the week-- Embach led with six assists and eight points.....Meurs had points in each game and led with four goals and added three assists for seven points...Kashirsky registered four points (1g, 3a).....Szydlowski (1g, 2a), Southorn (3a) and Alberga (2g, 1a) each had three points....Thompson (1g, 1a), Daniels (1g, 1a), Schaafsma (1g, 1a) and Ouellet (1g, 1a) each contributed two points.....Nagle started all four games going 3-0-1 in 243:04, made 125 saves on 131 shots for a 1.48 goals-against average and .954 save percentage for the week. Nagle also stopped an Indy penalty shot in Friday's 2-1 win at Indy.

Komet leaders-- Embach leads with 13 goals, eight power play goals (ECHL high) and 30 points....Embach is tied with Thompson for a team-best 17 assists.....Daniels leads with +15.....Cody Sol leads with 68 penalty minutes.....Brett Perlini continues to lead with 95 shots.

Streaking Komets-- Komets have a three-game winning streak in addition to a seven-game point streak (6-0-1).....Meurs has a six-game point-scoring streak (5g, 5a) and a three-game assist streak (3a)......Embach has a three-game assist and point streak (2g, 6a).....Nagle is unbeaten in seven straight starts (6-0-1).

Special K's-- The Komets were 5/19 on the power play for a 26.3% rating on the week and posted 17 straight successful penalty kills for a streak of 25 straight successful kills heading into week 13. The Komets have the number one power play unit in the ECHL with a 24.8% power play rating (29/117) and rank seventh on the penalty kill at 85.5% (106/124).

Beaupre, Belzile return-- Defenseman Gabriel Beaupre and forward Alex Belzile have been reassigned to Fort Wayne from San Antonio of the AHL today and are expected to be in the lineup this weekend when the Komets skate a pair of games at Quad City. Beaupre made his first AHL appearance of the season Dec. 29 while Belzile skated his first two AHL games of the season Dec. 29 and Jan. 1. Beaupre has scored a goal and 26 penalty minutes in 18 games with Fort Wayne. Belzile has four goals and 14 points in 13 Komet games and returns riding a six-game point-scoring streak (1g, 7a) and an ECHL-high six-game assist streak (7a).

The week ahead-- A battle for first place in the Midwest Division will take place this weekend when the Komets skate a pair of games at division rival Quad City (16-14-3, 35 points). The double-header starts with an 8:05pm ET faceoff Friday at the iWireless (9,000) Center in Moline, Illinois and concludes with a 5:05pm ET start Sunday. The Komets were clipped by the Mallards at Quad City 2-1 in the first meeting of the season Nov. 16. The Komets lead the second-place Mallards by a point heading into this weekend's games. Both teams are idle until Friday. Quad City suffered a 4-1 home loss to Allen on Jan. 2 in their last time out and are 1-5-0 in their last six games. Four meetings will remain after this weekend and all will be in Fort Wayne with the first meeting slated for Feb. 6.

Komets next home game-- The Komets will host the Orlando Solar Bears when home action continues Friday, Jan. 15 at 8pm. It will be the first of three home games in three straight nights. Rapid City will visit for back-to-back games on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 7:30pm and Sunday, Jan. 17 at 5pm.

OmniSource Season Ticket Recycling Night Friday, Jan. 15-- Friday night, Jan. 15, season ticket holders will have their first chance to exchange unused season tickets from previous games of the season for tickets to see the Komets face the Orlando Solar Bears at 8:00, compliments of OmniSource.

It's Super Hero Night Saturday, Jan. 16-- The Komets will salute Fort Wayne area police officers, firefighters, paramedics, teachers, nurses, doctors and all super heroes when they host the Rapid City Rush at 7:30pm. The Komets will wear special super hero jerseys in the game that will be auctioned during the game. Costumed super hero characters will also be appearing for photos courtesy TAG Art Company.

Kids Seat Free Sunday, Jan. 17-- The Komets will feature another Kids Seat Free Night when the Rapid City Rush visit Sunday, Jan. 17 at 5pm courtesy Aunt Millie's, Parkview Health and the Komets. Any child under the age of 12 can see the game for free with a full-priced adult ticket purchase.

This weekend Shane Albahrani will be substituting for Bob when the Komets skate at Quad City Friday and Sunday.

Happy Birthday Bob! -- The Komets will honor Bob Chase on Sunday, Jan. 17 when Rapid City visits for a 5pm faceoff. Chase will be celebrating his 90th birthday in January and Komet fans can be part of the special celebration.
