Walleye Set Sellout Record

January 4, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Toledo Walleye News Release

Walleye Notes

Packing the barn : Toledo saw standing room only crowds on both Wednesday and Saturday this past week and have had sellouts in six of the twelve home games played so far this year, which is a new record. The Walleye also set a new record this past week by posting sellout crowds in four consecutive games played (December 19 through January 2) and also tied the mark of five sellouts before January 1 set in 2009-10 (taking 20 games to reach five that season, compared to 10 this season). The average attendance for this season is 6,933 which is second in the ECHL to Fort Wayne (7,335).

Walleye rebound after a tough start to week : The week started with an outstanding defensive game played by Toledo and Elmira that saw the Jackals out last the Walleye 2-1 Wednesday, snapping Toledo's five-game winning streak. Thursday night, the Walleye were held to just 18 shots in a 4-0 loss at Cincinnati. Forward Shane Berschbach scored early Saturday night but two secondperiod goals from Fort Wayne sent Toledo to a 2-1 loss. The Walleye found the win column Sunday as four different players had goals in a 4-1 victory over Elmira.

Offense from the defense : Defenseman Joel Chouinard had a power play goal and also added an assist in Sunday's 4-1 win over Elmira. The 25-year-old defenseman has 20 points (5G, 15A) in just 26 games for the Walleye this season and is tied for fourth among all ECHL defensemen in scoring. He has been tremendous on the man advantage, picking up 10 power play assists, which ranks fourth among all ECHL skaters.

On the hook: Toledo hits the road for the lone trip this month as they travel to Reading, Pennsylvania for a pair of games Friday and Saturday nights. These are the only meetings this year between the Walleye and the Royals. Toledo has an all-time ECHL record of 33-27-8 vs. Reading. Following this trip, Toledo plays eight consecutive games at the Huntington Center.

Former Walleye named CCM/AHL Goaltender: Grand Rapids Griffins goaltender Jared Coreau has been selected as the CCM/AHL Goaltender of the Month for December. Coreau made 11 starts in December and finished with a 9-2-0 record along with a 1.92 goals against average and a .938 save percentage. In his third professional season, the 24-year-old is 15-4-1 in 21 appearances for Grand Rapids in 2015-16. Coreau played parts of two seasons with the Toledo Walleye.
