Hounds Open Road Trip with Bounceback Victory

February 4, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Soo Greyhounds News Release

For the second straight game the Soo Greyhounds put a halt to their oppositions respective winning streak.

Four days after dropping the Kitchener Rangers on home ice, the Hounds came back from a 2-0 early first period deficit to score five unanswered goals and hand the North Bay Battalion their first regulation loss in eight games.

It also began the Hounds present roadtrip on a winning note.

"A few times we have been able to come back in the last couple months and win hockey games whether it be on the road or at home. We continue to play pretty good games on the road" started Hounds Head Coach Drew Bannister.

"It's a pretty good start to the roadtrip and we'll get ready for tomorrow now" he added.

Sooite Mike Amadio opened the game's scoring just 1:53 into the first period when he circled the Greyhound net and put the puck on goal where it redirect before hitting off the right post and barely crossing the line to give the Battalion the 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later (6:03), Cam Dineen's pass from the left point set-up Daniil Vertiy to the left of BRANDON HALVERSON for a one-time shot and 2-0 lead

And after starting the period with just a single registered shot on goal in the first eight minutes, it would be the midway point of the period where the Hounds would find their own offensive game.

ZACH SENYSHYN picked up speed on the left wing (10:23) while skating on a 2-on-2, and after cutting to the net backhanded a shot five-hole on Jake Smith for his 31st goal of the season and cutting the deficit to a single goal.

Less than three minutes later Captain BLAKE SPEERS skated in off the wall before firing home a shot to the blocker side to quickly erase the North Bay lead and even the game at a pair of goals.

GABE GUERTLER picked up the assist on the goal.

The go-ahead goal, and eventual game winner, would come with 2:19 to play in the period when TIM GETTINGER circled in the left corner before his centring pass went off the skate of BORIS KATCHOUK and across the line to give the Hounds a 3-2 lead after twenty-minutes.

The Hounds would successfully kill off 1:53 of a penalty to start the second before extending their lead in timely fashion, just thirty-four seconds later.

BOBBY MACINTYRE's shot over the glove hand of Smith would mark his 15th goal of the season at 2:31, while putting the Hounds ahead 4-2.

"That was a big goal, and obviously a very good shot. Again generated a little bit of pressure, made a quick change and got fresh guys out and he was able to get on a loose puck and it was a well executed shot under the cross bar" said Bannister of the MacIntyre goal.

Then before the period was five minutes old, BORIS KATCHOUK took the puck hard to the net beofre backhanding home his second goal of the night and 18th of the season for the 5-2 Greyhound lead.

That goal, assisted by TIM GETTINGER and GUSTAV BOURAMMAN ended Jake Smith's night after the North Bay netminder surrendered five goals on eleven shots faced.

Jake Kment would come in relieft and turn aside all thirteen Hounds shots he faced the rest of the way.

At the other end of the ice, BRANDON HALVERSON stood tall in particular in the final three minutes of the second period turning aside both Mike Baird and Zach Poirier while the Hounds held onto their three goal cushion.

A quick pace and territorial advantage would start the third period for the visitors in the Hounds, as the trio of BLAKE SPEERS, GABE GUERTLER and ZACH SENYSHYN helped start the third of nearly a full two minutes in the offensive zone.

The Hounds shut North Bay down to just three shots in the opening ten minutes of the third, and just six shots overall in the period, before winning their second consecutive game and beginning their latest set in a winning fashion.

"I thought our best period was probably the third period, they didn't get anything. We kept them hemmed in their zone, kept the puck low, we did a good job that way" explained Bannister.

The victory improved the Hounds to 22-20-5-1, good for 50 points and moving them within a single point of the Owen Sound Attack for sixth in the Western Conference.

Additionally, it moved the Hounds five points ahead of Saginaw, while the Hounds still hold a pair of games in hand.
