Albany Devils News Release
LOWELL, Mass. - In the first-ever match-up between the Lowell Devils and Syracuse Crunch, it was the Crunch coming out on top with a 3-2 win on Wednesday at the Tsongas Arena. Dan LaCosta made 32 saves for Syracuse for his first win since December 11.
The Devils staked the Crunch a 3-0 cushion before getting on the board with 7.8 seconds left in the second period. Myles Stoesz's entry-zone pass off the wall led Louis Robitaille down the near side for a wrist shot that was eventually banged in by Eric Castonguay.
Brad Mills got Lowell within a goal in the early minutes of the third frame, tipping in Matt Taormina's point shot at the 1:51 mark for his fourth goal of the season.
Syracuse jumped all over the home team in the first period, scoring twice in less than two minutes to take a 2-0 edge. The Crunch went ahead at 6:32 when Simon Ferguson skated behind the net and found Kevin Harvey in the slot for a one-timer inside the left post.
Maksim Mayorov pushed the Crunch lead to two at 8:24 of the same period as he floated down the right wing and was able to fire home the long rebound off the leg pad of Mike McKenna. That would end the night for McKenna, who finished with three saves on five shots over 8:24.
The Crunch made the score 3-0 on the power play at 4:17 of the second with Jonathan Sigalet rocketing a slapshot over the blocker of Jeff Frazee. Sigalet's goal would prove to be the eventual game-winner, handing Frazee the loss despite making 20 saves in relief.
The Lowell Devils travel to take on the Manchester Monarchs on Friday, January 15 at 7:30PM. Go online to AHLlive.com to listen or watch all of the live Devils action. It's Ben Walter Bobblehead Day on Saturday, January 16 when the Devils face the Portland Pirates at 1:30PM.
