November 15, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
In the second of two games in less than 24 hours, the Lake Erie Monsters (4-7-1-2) were outlasted in a shootout by the Adirondack Flames (8-6-1-0), who topped the Monsters 3-2 at Quicken Loans Arena. Ben Street and Colin Smith scored for the Monsters, while Calvin Pickard posted 36 saves. The Monsters are back in action at home on Friday against Grand Rapids at 7:30 p.m.
Corban Knight scored the lone goal in the first period. In the midst of a scramble in the Monsters goal crease, Knight was able to get a stick on the puck and slip it past Monsters goalie Calvin Pickard, giving the Flames a 1-0 lead that carried into the first intermission.
The Monsters tied the game at 1-1 3:45 into the second period when Ben Street carried a puck up the right side and centered a backhand pass in the direction of Andrew Agozzino. The pass never made it to Agozzino, but deflected in off an Adirondack defender for Street's first goal of the season. Agozzino and Tomas Vincour assisted on the goal.
Colin Smith gave the Monsters their only lead of the game at 2:24 of the third period, making the score 2-1. Mike Sgarbossa's pressure on the forecheck forced the Flames to turn the puck over behind the net, and Troy Bourke spotted Smith open in front of the net. Smith one-timed the feed from Bourke for his fourth goal of the season. Seven minutes later, Adirondack tied the game when Bill Arnold sent a puck toward the Monsters net that was tipped past Pickard, tying the game at 2-2 for the Flames.
Arnold's goal ultimately forced overtime and a shootout, during which the Flames secured the second point and the win. In the shootout, the Flames scored three times, and the Monsters scored twice. Adirondack's Emile Poirier netted the shootout winner, while Mike Sgarbossa and Colin Smith each scored for the Monsters in the shootout.
Pickard's record moves to 3-4-3 with the shootout loss; he stopped 36 of 38 shots and one of four shooters in the shootout. Brad Thiessen stopped 33 of 35 shots in the win, moving his record to 2-3-0 on the campaign. Thiessen stopped two of four Monsters shootout attempts.
The Monsters host Grand Rapids on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The game airs live on ESPN 850 WKNR.
