Americans too Strong for Pats

Regina Pats News Release

Regina, Saskatchewan - The Regina Pats (4-3-1-0) dropped tonight's game by a 3-1 score to the Tri-City Americans (6-3-0-0). The Pats honoured the 1974 Memorial Cup Champions who were celebrating the fortieth anniversary of their win this weekend.

First Period After the pre-game ceremonies concluded the Pats got on the attack early with a powerplay opportunity. Sam Steel spied Pavel Padakin across the ice and hit him with a pass before Padakin fired a shot off the face of Dryden Hunt and into the Tri-City net. The Pats kept up the pressure and outshot the Americans 14-5 in the period, but wouldn't leave with a lead. On a late powerplay, Parker Bowles found himself alone in front of the Regina net and roofed the puck to tie the game 1-1 through the first.

Second Period In contrast to the fast pace of the opening frame, the second period saw both teams struggle to get in a groove. The Americans took advantage of sloppy play by the home side to turn the tables and outshoot the Pats 14-5 in the second. Tri-City took the lead on the rush when the visitors cobbled together a two-on-one into the Regina zone. Jackson Playfair had time to line up a shot on the short side and snapped the puck past Daniel Wapple's glove for the lone goal of the period.

Third Period The Blue and White had their best chance of the early stages off the stick of Austin Wagner as the speedster stole the puck and got in alone on Eric Comrie. The star goaltender tracked Wagner's deke and made a great blocker save. The Americans netminder was tested often in the final frame as the Queen City Kids got back on track, but couldn't find a tying goal. Tri-City got some insurance when Braden Purtill fired a shot from the top of the circle that re-directed off a body in front and into the goal for a 3-1 Americans lead. The Pats continued to attack after the goal, but ran out of time as Tri-City picked up the victory to push their record to 4-1-0-0 on their road trip. It was the final game of a four game home stand for the Pats in which they went 2-1-1-0.

The Blue and White head out on the road for three games in three nights next weekend starting Friday in Cranbrook when they match up again with the Kootenay Ice followed by contests in Lethbridge and Calgary. All road games can be heard on 620 CKRM starting 25 minutes before puck drop.
