Revs Clinch Cup As Thurm Makes More History

July 29, 2014 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

Corey Thurman moved into a tie for second place in Atlantic League history in career wins, helping his team move into first place in the second half standings as the York Revolution clinched possession of the Community Cup with a 5-2 win over the Lancaster Barnstormers on Monday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The Revs will go for a series sweep on Tuesday night in Lancaster, before returning home for a three-game series against Southern Maryland beginning on Wednesday evening.

Thurman (6-3) allowed just two runs over five innings to earn the win, the 62nd of his Revs career. The victory total matches that of Lincoln Mikkelsen for second most in league history, placing Thurman second in all three major pitching categories including innings and strikeouts. By going five innings in Monday's game, Thurman has now logged exactly 900.0 innings in his Revolution career.

Offensively, York scored the game's first run in the top of the third on a squeeze bunt by Eric Patterson, bringing home Justin Greene who had doubled earlier in the inning.

The Revs then ripped off three more runs in the top of the fifth. Sean Smith doubled to start the rally, before Greene walked and Wilson Valdez reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Patterson drove home the first run with a single to right, Chad Tracy provided a sacrifice fly to center, and a third run scored on an error as the lead grew to 4-0.

Lancaster sliced into that margin on a two-out, two-run single by Cole Garner in the bottom of the fifth, snapping a 17.0-inning scoreless streak for Thurman, but that was all that Lancaster could manage against the right-hander.

York recouped one of those runs in the top of the sixth as Greene doubled to right-center with two outs and scored on a bloop double to right by Valdez to round out the scoring for the night.

The Revs' bullpen took it from there, as Beau Vaughan, Mark Hendrickson, Stephen Penney, and Rommie Lewis all worked scoreless innings. Lewis notched his 24th save of the season, adding to his club record.

The Revs improve to 10-5 against Lancaster for the season, retaining the Community Cup by clinching at least a draw in the head-to-head series with five meetings still ahead. It is the fourth time that the Revs have won the hardware and the first time they've held it in back-to-back seasons.

Valdez went 4-for-4 to lead a 10-hit attack for the Revs, while reaching base all five times and stealing two bases. His four-hit game established a personal season-best and tied a season-high for a Revs batter.

Greene went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and scored three times, as his league-best batting average climbed two more points to .386. The York leadoff man has now hit safely in 16 of his last 17 games.

Patterson's two RBI led the way in that department, giving him five RBI in the series.

Notes: York has won nine of its last 12 overall including five of the last six games. The Revs have won seven of their last eight on the road, and are now 26-18 on the road and at home for the season. York is a season-best 16 games above .500 at 52-36 overall. Lewis now has 29 saves in his Revs career, two shy of tying the club record held by R.J. Rodriguez. Penney's scoreless eighth inning marked his 17th consecutive scoreless appearance. The York bullpen has allowed just two runs in 18.2 innings over the last seven games. The game was delayed one hour and 28 minutes at the outset due to rain. York lefty Logan Williamson (3-3, 2.68) will face Lancaster right-hander Chris Schwinden (9-2, 3.12) in Tuesday's series finale at 7 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 6:40 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
