Bridgeport Drops Series to Long Island in Extra Innings

(Bridgeport, Conn. - July 29, 2014) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (11-10, 33-58) were defeated by the Long Island Ducks (6-14, 46-43), 4-2 on Tuesday night in the finale of a four-game series at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

The Ducks scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning on an RBI groundout from Brendan Harris to shortstop Mike Richard, which scored leadoff hitter Fehlandt Lentini. The Bluefish would answer in the bottom of the first inning when Prentice Redman hit a mammoth solo home run to deep left field.

Long Island retook the lead in the top of the third inning with a run on an RBI single by veteran Lew Ford, which again scored Lentini. Then in the bottom of the ninth inning with the Bluefish down to their last out, Bridgeport first baseman Austin Gallagher tied the game with a dramatic towering solo home run to right field.

In the top of the 11th inning, after Cody Puckett laid down a sacrifice bunt, which Gallagher threw to third base in an attempt to retire the lead runner, Adam Bailey, but his throw sailed wide and Bailey scored as the Ducks took a one run lead. Long Island then added another run in the inning as Puckett scored on an RBI single by Joash Brodin.

Bridgeport starting pitcher D.J. Mitchell settled for a no decision going eight innings allowing two runs, nine hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. Bluefish reliever Winston Abreu (0-5) suffered the loss surrendering two runs (one earned), three hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Long Island starting pitcher Bobby Blevins also had to settle for a no decision pitching nine innings allowing two runs, seven hits and no walks with eight strikeouts. Ducks reliever Brett Lorin (1-1) picked up the win going a perfect two innings with two strikeouts.

For the Bluefish, Juan Martinez went 2-for-4 while Redman was 2-for-5 with a solo home run.

The Bluefish will play travel to Sugar Land, Texas to start a six game series tomorrow night before returning home to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard next Wednesday, August 6th to start a six game home stand that begins with a three game set against the Lancaster Barnstormers.
