Blue Crabs Best Ducks in Pitcher's Duel, 4-2

Central Islip, N.Y. - The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 4-2 on Monday morning in the first game of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Southern Maryland scored first when Jeremy Owens singled in a run in the fifth inning. The Blue Crabs doubled their lead in the sixth when Wladimir Sutil scored on an error. Sutil then hit a two-run single to left field in the seventh inning to extend the lead to four.

Bryant Nelson put the Ducks on the board with a two-out RBI single to center field in the eighth inning. Bill Hall followed with another single to drive in a run, but the Ducks could not come any closer.

Blue Crabs starter Ian Marshall (9-3) picked up the win, allowing eight hits and two runs with six strikeouts in eight innings. Long Island starter Dontrelle Willis (5-4) took the loss in a complete game effort, letting up four runs (three earned) on seven hits. Jim Ed Warden pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his 21st save.

Joash Brodin and Dan Lyons led the Ducks with two hits apiece.

The Ducks continue their series against the Blue Crabs on Monday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. The first 1,500 fans through the gates will receive Foam Fingers, presented by People's Alliance Federal Credit Union. Right-hander Nick DeBarr takes the mound for the Ducks against Blue Crabs southpaw Wade Korpi.
