Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
WALDORF, Md. - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, as they have all year, proved persistence pays with their 4-2 victory over the Long Island Ducks Monday at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip, NY. All-Star, Ian Marshall, took the hill for the Blue Crabs looking to build off an impressive first half of the season. He was opposed by fellow All-Star and Liberty Division starter Dontrelle Willis, who was looking to continue his success in his first season in the Atlantic League. Early on, offense was hard to come by, as neither team was able to put together a serious threat. The Blue Crabs offense stuck with it and was able to break through late, with the help of some defensive miscues and earn Ian Marshall his ninth win on the season.
After playing extra innings in York the night before and traveling through the night to get to Long Island, the Blue Crabs had the daunting task of facing one of the league's best pitchers in Dontrelle Willis with an early game time of 11:05am. Willis and Marshall were locked in a pitcher's duel through the first four innings until the Blue Crabs were able to strike first. With two outs, Mike Richard doubled to left and Jeremy Owens followed with a single to right plating the first run of the game. The Blue Crabs got another in the sixth after Wladimir Sutil scored on an error by the Long Island third basemen. Sutil was then able to knock in a pair of runs in the top of the seventh scoring Owens and Richard. Meanwhile, Marshall was mowing down the Ducks, as he went eight innings only allowing two runs late. Closer, Jim Ed Warden, came in to shut the door on any potential Duck comeback, pitching a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his 21st save on the season.
UP NEXT - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs look to gain ground on the division leading Ducks in game two of the three game set Tuesday at 7:05pm. The Blue Crabs next return home to take on the York Revolution beginning on July 18th. To listen to the Blue Crabs tune in to www.phoenixintermedia.com.
