York Revolution News Release
For the second consecutive game, the York Revolution used a game-tying home run in the eighth inning to force extra innings, but on Monday night, it ended sourly with a 5-2 loss in ten innings to the Bridgeport Bluefish in the series opener at Sovereign Bank Stadium. The Revs will look to bounce back on Tuesday with two games remaining on the current homestand.
Down 2-1 with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, cleanup hitter Andy Marte continued his recent tear, crushing a game-tying solo home run to left field off reliever Emiliano Fruto. It was his third home run in the last two days and team-best 15th of the season.
The Revs had a chance to win in the bottom of the ninth, as Chad Tracy doubled and Cody Johnson reached on an infield single with one out. But reliever Ruddy Lugo (1-0) recorded a fielder's choice grounder from Ruddy Yan with Tracy thrown out attempting to score, before striking out Kody Kirkland to end the threat and force extras.
Prentice Redman provided the decisive blow for the Bluefish with a three-run homer to left-center with two outs in the top of the tenth inning, just his third home run of the season.
York struck first in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI single high off the left field wall by Salvador Paniagua. The Revs managed just two runs despite 11 hits on the night, however, going 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Paniagua's hit was the only hit of the three with men in scoring position that produced a run.
Revs starter Brett Tomko took a one-hitter into the sixth, but after ninth place hitter Iggy Suarez lined a leadoff single against the left field wall, Daniel Mayora struck a game-tying triple to right, and later scored on a double play grounder to give Bridgeport a 2-1 lead.
Tomko was solid in the no-decision, working seven-plus innings, allowing just two runs on four hits. He tied his season-high in innings, as well as strikeouts (eight). It marked the second time in as many starts that he allowed just two runs on four hits in seven innings, both against Bridgeport.
It was just the fourth time in team history that the Revs have played back-to-back extra-inning games, and the first time since 2009 that it has happened. It was also the third extra-inning game for the Revs in the last five contests.
The Revs will send Pedro Liriano (3-2, 4.15) to the hill on Tuesday opposite Bridgeport's Trevor Reckling, making his Atlantic League debut. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
