Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, Calif. - The Fresno Grizzlies erased a six-run deficit to come back and beat the Salt Lake Bees 9-8 in 10 innings on Saturday night at Chukchansi Park. Roger Kieschnick hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the 10th with the bases loaded to score Carter Jurica and end the game.
The Grizzlies' 17th comeback win of the season was also the second extra-inning victory for Fresno in the current homestand. Johnny Monell, who singled in the 10th inning to put runners at the corners, hit a two-run home run off the batter's eye in the eighth to force extra innings.
The Grizzlies fell behind 7-1 after two innings, but over the course of the next six frames, Fresno eventually tied the game.
The comeback started in the fourth inning when Chris Dominguez hit a solo blast onto Home Run Alley beyond the left field wall, and Kensuke Tanaka plated Cole Gillespie with an RBI single. Gillespie reached base after tripling to right field.
Fresno scored another two runs in the fifth when Monell hit a leadoff triple and scored on a Brett Pill infield single. Later in the inning, Pill scored on a Dominguez double play.
The Grizzlies did not require a base hit once again for their run in the seventh. Dominguez scored on a throwing error by left fielder Matt Long during Gillespie's single.
George Kontos threw two scoreless innings, including a 10th frame in which he struck out the side, to earn the win. It was Kontos' first appearance since being optioned from San Francisco.
Mason Tobin contributed two shutout innings from the Grizzlies bullpen. It was Tobin's fifth straight scoreless appearance.
Monell went 3-for-5 with a triple, home run, and two RBI. Tanaka and Dominguez also added three-hit performances for Fresno, helping the Grizzlies tally 16 hits. Tanaka extended his on-base streak to 13 games, matching the season-high for a Grizzlies hitter.
Fresno starting pitcher Mike Kickham bore much of the damage in his four-inning start. The left-hander allowed a three-run home run by Kole Calhoun in the first and an additional four runs in the second.
Ryan Brasier took the loss for Salt Lake, surrendering three runs (two earned) over 2 1/3 innings.
The Grizzlies and Bees will meet for game three of their four-game series on Sunday at 2:05 pm. Right-hander Boof Bonser will start for the Grizzlies and Billy Bucker will take the mound for Salt Lake.
