Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (38-28), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, play a double header tonight with the Carolina Mudcats beginning at 6:05 p.m. EST. The Pelicans need one win to clinch the southern division first half title. Nick Martinez (5-3, 2.54) starts game on and he'll be opposed by right-hander Nick Pasquale (0-4, 4.45).

OVERVIEW ... The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are celebrating their 15th Anniversary season on the Grand Strand and are in their third season as the Advanced-A affiliates of the Texas Rangers. More than 3 million fans have attended a regular season Pelicans game since the franchise's inception in 1999. The team has won more than 1,000 regular season games in the last 15 seasons.

LAST NIGHT ... The Myrtle Beach Pelicans surrendered a season-high 18 hits but escaped with a 10-7 win to earn their eighth game in a row. Rougned Odor and Kellin Deglan each had run-producing triples during a four-run first inning. The Pelicans sent 12 men to the plate and scored six runs in the sixth inning.

MAGIC NUMBER '1' ... The magic number for the Pelicans is one. The Pelicans can clinch the first half in the southern division by winning one of their next three games or if the Dash lose one of their final two games. The Birds have three scheduled games left which would bring them to 69 first half games. The Dash have two remaining games and would play 70 first half games. If somehow the Pelicans and Dash end up with the same winning percentage, the Pelicans would own the head-to-head having won 4-of-6 head-to-head matchups.

MAKE THAT EIGHT ... The Pelicans are in the midst of their longest winning streak of the first half. During the current eight-game streak, the Pelicans are averaging 6.13 runs per game and have allowed more than four runs just once during the stretch. Double digits - Yesterday's 10-run uprising was the Pelicans first 10+ run game in June; the team had four such games in May.

40-WIN HALF ... The Pelicans need two more wins to reach the 40-win plateau. The most wins the Pelicans have had in a half since Jason Wood took over in 2011 was 40 in the first half of that season. If the Pelicans win out they would finish 41-28.

UP NEXT ... Tonight is an iPad giveaway - the first 1,000 fans will receive an iPad cover presented by Sheriar Press. Father's Day Sunday will feature pregame catch on the field and postgame fireworks. The Pelicans return home on Friday, June 28, to take on the Lynchburg Hillcats (Class-A Advanced, Braves).

COACHING STAFF ... Jason Wood returns for his third season as the Pelicans skipper and his fifth as a coach in the Rangers system. He is the only Carolina League skipper to have guided his team to back-to-back postseasons in 2011 and 2012. His staff includes pitching coach Steve Mintz, hitting coach Josue Perez and assistant Humberto Miranda - all three in their first year with the Birds.

ON THE AIR ... All 140 Myrtle Beach Pelicans games in 2013 can be heard on Fox Sports Radio on the Grand Strand (AM 1050 and FM 101.9). Video for all 70 home games is available online at www.milb.tv.
