Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A 4-run 5th inning pushed the Kernels to a 8-4 win over the Kane County Cougars on Sunday afternoon. The win snapped the Kernels 3-game losing streak.
Kane County got the scoring started in the top of the 1st when Jeimer Candelario doubled home Bijan Rademacher.
The Kernels began their run scoring in the 2nd as Adam Brett Walker led off with a walk, Tyler Grimes reached on a fielder's choice, and both of them scored on Michael Quesada's double. A few batters later, J.D. Williams drew a bases loaded walk and Jorge Polanco recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice to put the Kernels ahead 4-1.
Marco Hernandez led off the Cougars' 4th with a solo home run. One inning later, Dan Vogelbach blasted a 2-run home run to score Albert Almora and tie the game at 4.
The Kernels responded with a big 5th inning of their own, however. Walker doubled to lead off the frame, Travis Harrison walked, and then Quesada struck again doubling home Walker two batters later. Byron Buxton then put a dent in the line score with a 2-run double off the left centerfield wall. Buxton finished the contest 1-for-2 with 3 walks. Quesada went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. J.D. Williams went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and 2 stolen bases.
Kernels starter Hudson Boyd was able to get out of a couple of jams with Kane County runners on base, but ultimately didn't get out of the 5th. Boyd threw 4 innings, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits while walking 2 and striking out 6. Reliever Steve Gruver (3-1) spelled Boyd, and Gruver threw 4 perfect innings while striking out 3 for the victory. Tyler Jones pitched the 9th, striking out 2.
Cougars starter Dillon Maples struggled with control, leaving the game after 2 innings. Maples allowed 4 runs on 1 hit while walking 7. Reliever Felix Pena (2-1) took the loss, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits.
